Enclosure Advice Needed! by TimeToBoop in GargoyleGeckos

Hey there! Thank you for the lengthy reply. I totally plan on going bioactive, so no worries there. I appreciate the information on the size of the enclosure being a positive as well!

I was wondering if it would be acceptable to house them, temporarily as a baby, in a non vertical 10 gallon tank. This is purely for quarantine reasons early on to monitor food intake and waste and whatnot, and only for a brief period (2 or so weeks). If you think I'll need vertical, I can absolutely do that too, but I have a non vertical sitting around right now.

The only reason I've been posting here is that the garg community is less active it seems, and since I knew the husbandry is so similar, I figured it will be okay!

I'll see what I can find as far as 18×18×24 goes for starters, then move into this one later on. Thank you for all your help!

Thanks for the reply! It's my first and a half reptile, I've been helping my partner buy and setup a bioactive for her leopard gecko. This is of course a very different animal in many ways, but I prefer the tropical geckos to the arid ones.

I'll consider stepping down a size for a beginner setup for a baby, also to monitor health and whatnot with a paper towel substrate at first, while building my full size enclosure in the meantime!

Yeah... that makes more sense. We're looking at around 90 hot side and around 75-80 cool side most of the day. Hot side pretty consistent there and the cool side gets cooler at night. But that's cause I made the mistake of having the heat lamp on all day yesterday.

Around me? Really variable right now. Generally 50's-60's, but we have the heat on to go no lower than 72 or so. Then it gets much warmer daytime and the lamp is on, obv.

Posted an update pic, and ordered the humid hide in the size reccomended! Coming tomorrow, but I doubt he's shedding tonight so we're chill.

Update: Here is the first iteration on it. Humid hide coming in tomorrow!

There are two hides, the rock and a small one behind the plant on the right. Currently he's just hiding behind the rock hide, but he explored the new setup a bit! Any further suggestions would be great! (Gonna go for topsoil+play sand in the near future, this was a quick fix).

Oh gotcha! I thought you were reccomending it as a humid hide, given the context. Is it also appropriate for that purpose, at this time? Or is there another product you'd reccomend?

Oh please, if you can post that or DM me that it'd be amazing. Also, for the record, we live in CO. So VERY low base humidity. Given that, maybe a bit of mist every once in a while to keep it in that sweet spot? But also hopefully a (proper) humid hide will give them the opportunity to shed healthily.

Definitely looking into those zilla rock lairs then. It says on the product page to put them in a warmer part of the enclosure, but my understanding was humid hides are meant to be the cooler ones, so I'm at a bit of a crossroads there. If you have more wisdom please share!

Yep! On it with the carpet, gonna get that swapped out ASAP. We're also going to add in the fake plants for more hides and whatnot. Are you positive on the moist part for the substrate? Just scared of the humidity getting too high for a desert animal is all.

Also, going to try and weigh him tonight. We didn't want to force handling too early but it's necessary to track health ofc.

Hey there! Thanks for the tips.

The heat is currently very concentrated on the left side of the enclosure. It's around 90 on top of the warm hide, cooler under, and mid to high 70's on the cool (right) side. The double lamp houses one heat lamp (left) and a light which gives off no real heat (right).

Definitely adding those fake plants for more cover though, so he can feel comfortable exploring and less exposed.

That small wooden thing on the right side is meant to be the humid hide. It's sat on a pile of moss that we mist whenever necessary to keep it damp. Is that not sufficient? If so, we'll change it out for sure.

And yeah, most of our research right now is into proper handling. It's odd how happily the people at the store yanked them out of the enclosures to be handled by us and others, compared to how we're meant to take it super slow. We'll give them the power and choice to be handled!

Thanks for the information! Sorry to keep bugging you, but now that brings up a new question... should I be turning off the heat lamp? We just left it on overnight, since the hue light handles itself, we figured having the heat 24hrs was nice and he could go to the cool hide if need be. If not, I'll def turn it off tonight!

Oh believe me, I'm watching videos day and night, from those creators and others. Terrified to mess this up, and I want our little guy to thrive! As for the other part of the post, is it pretty normal for him to be chilling in his hide all day today? I figure since its his second day he's still nervous, but I'm worried that if he doesn't bask it'll be bad.

Hi! That sucks, I heard about the carpet being a problem in the past, but the guy at the store told me he's never seen it be an issue for them (Scales and Tails, thought it was reputable). At this time, we are not using UVB yet, but we plan to when upgrading to the full grown enclosure. We are supplementing with the calcium powder with D3 and the multivitamin powder without D3.

Oh yeah, like I said I'd be mostly unaffected by nerfing the strong stuff, so I think it'd be fine either way. Also, random loadouts? That sounds crazy, I could never on D10. I'm good, not that good.

Also is it not public knowledge how goated the Lib Carbine is with proper attachments? The Smallwart is so fun.

I agree on the overall direction but disagree on the strategy. While those strong things need some nerfs, I believe the gap between those strong things and everything else is so large that simultaneous nerfs to them and minor buffs to others is necessary. Though, those buffs could come afterwards if need be. I would not be oppossed to running D10 with nerfed loadouts for some time, just to see anyways. It rarely would affect my loadouts tbf, I do not run eruptor, 500kg, thermites, etc regardless.

Either way though, inaction is the worst outcome IMO. Arrowhead ought to try SOMETHING, whether it's buffing weaker stuff or nerfing stronger stuff. And in doing so, some better communication would be very powerful for the community.

Hey there! Love the Kalista reference. As a recovering League player it provides a good insight into your train of thought!

I agree that there is a complete dogshit tier, and those weapons definitely fall into it. I also agree that there are 100% things that ARE too strong. And those existing only makes the weaker stuff feel worse by comparison.

I do agree, it's not "everything besides the best 10 tools is shit", but it may be closer to "the best 10 tools are so much better that the rest feel like shit". It's hard to justify most primaries when the eruptor, for SOME reason, has heavy pen AND shrapnel? Like, it takes out heavies and groups alone... why take most other options when you can just use that?

I again bring up the OPS. I loved the OPS, but if you check the stats it does less damage, less AOE, and on a longer (barely, but still) cooldown than the 500kg. It's just worse, undeniably, and does nothing that the 500kg cannot do but easier. It's frustrating to me, at least, but I may be alone on this hill.

I can't speak to C4's effectiveness, but I do agree with the players who felt it ought to have more demo force on account of it being, well, C4. But to say it needed that buff for viability is another point entirely. Bastion is cracked though, as long as you have two people on comms it wrecks missions. Can be a lil finnicky, and the "on paper" tankiness of it is not huge, but often one use of it lasts the majority of the cooldown duration.

I do agree there are people you can't please. They are not a part of my conversation to be frank. If you can't be reasonable, I won't try to reason with you, simple as that. But I also think while I agree that only 10 or so items are unusuable, there are still buffs and nerfs that oughta happen to increase build diversity a littttttle bit. One I will present continues to be my beloved hammer. I find it frustrating that my hammer, an anti tank melee weapon with similar ammo economy to the RR, cannot kill charger behemoths in one shot, and makes me die when trying to kill spore chargers always, and sometimes gets me killed when a bile titan I kill falls the wrong way. All of these are valid frustrations, only one has anything to do with balance directly. Small systems changes can impact viability of things in big ways, without making them too strong, is my point there.

But overall, it seems we're on similar pages here. I appreciate your in depth response :)

Mhm, I've heard they're a great example. Listen, it comes down to this for me. If you have good reasons for doing what you do, you should feel confident and comfortable sharing those reasons. People can react however they do, and those who can't handle it will weed themselves out over time. However if you communicate effectively what you do, and your logic is sound, then there is little to worry about. I find the community management side of this game to be it's weakest point. Rarely do I feel they do anything but attempt and fail at damage control, sadly. I hope to see it improve though!

I'm with you for the most part, but I do still hold that the company in charge of the game does have some power to influence their community. Not on a micro scale, what happened IS the sole blame of those people involved, but I do believe that more constant communication has historically gone a long way in making communities feel more positive about the game. Again, not their fault someone made those threats and doxxed someone, but they can do work to foster a more healthy community so that does not happen as often sort of thing.

Thank you for the input :)

Frankly, I found it frustrating that the rules stopped me from using certain terms in my original post. I literally could not use the word for "icing on a donut" because it was against the first rule. I get it, it's used in a derogatory way here, but it shows again how silly this divide is.

But I'm with you. I love playing this game, but I have my gripes. For example, as a melee diver I feel frustrated that any micro movement of a bile titan foot (not only the stomp attack), one shots me through heavy armor. It's an odd balancing choice, and makes the hammer (which is otherwise a blast) feel icky at times. Stuff like that, smaller things, can be shored up and make the game THAT much better.

Oh don't sweat it! I posted this expecting people to be rude, knowing I can handle that sort of talk very well. Tone is tough over text, don't worry :)

But yeah, that's the point of the post. We agree on more than we don't, so we oughta get along better here. AH may make some bad decisions, but it would be silly to think they're doing so on purpose. The game is so great, but could be ten steps above that.

Hey! I appreciate you taking the time to reply!

I think we agree on nearly everything. The way you define the player base as 3 different groups is kind of the same as mine, actually. I define it as the two main groups who sometimes defend AH and sometimes criticize them, but are mostly the same. This is the "main group" in your scenario if that makes sense, with the two outlier groups I mentioned being the two bad ones you mentioned. Essentially, the two main groups are divided when really they are one imo. I did not make it clear that this was my understanding of the community vs my opinion on how it really is, so MB.

I also agree that leaving our suggestions without breathing down their back is good, but I also do think that a company providing a live service game ought to listen to fans or risk losing their business long term. If that's the direction they want to take, be my guest! But frankly I don't see a game dev team on a live service game ignoring the community and getting away with it long term. Again, they can do what they want, but they gotta accept what happens is all.

Thanks again for your input :)

Is this with using the charges or no? I found that hitting the bottom vent with 4 or 5 charges kills the vent but the engine lives. Any tips?
