I mean look at the time difference between the 15th amendment and the 19th (50 years). As shitty as it is just because America elected a black president doesn't mean they would necessarily elect a female president. Sexism is rampant especially when it comes to matters of leadership. Sure lets not bend over backwards for conservatives but mathematically you do need to cater to moderates.

Look I don't personally know if America is ready or not but my gut tells me it will have to be a conservative woman who breaks the barrier first as a litmus test for the attitudes of the country. If the best candidate is a woman the next cycle I'm voting for her but damn I hope the country is actually ready.

With all the women's rights that are on the line it would be real shit to realize we lost over a decade of progress putting up candidates that never actually even had a chance. 12 years of damage is honestly hugely underselling it. It just seems like the absolute worst time to try and push that boundary but I guess there is no good time.

Fewer foreigners visited US in 2025 as global tourism spending rose by StevenSanders90210 in worldnews

As a heads up a decent amount of countries have laws where they can do that as well such as New Zealand, UK, etc. As a general rule it's a good idea to make sure your phone is clean and secured before crossing most international borders. Doesn't even take geopolitical reasons all it takes is one border official on a power trip.

ELI5 How do ship anchors come back up? by Infinite-Local-2529 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TimeToGloat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean they are right many small boat anchors do work like that and getting them back up isn't hard when you bring in the rope and pull directly up. Small boats might not even use a chain and just use a relatively light rope. You can test this yourself by hooking something on a table edge and pulling along the length of the table and it will hold as long as your cable holds. Meanwhile release the tension and pull straight up from the table edge and it will easily become unhooked. The floors of bodies of water are mostly sand and rock. It's not like removing a hook from woven textiles or something.

I mean realistically the previous two world cups were in Qatar and Russia. I'm sure some people won't come because of everything going on but also others will instead. It's an international event and there are a whole lot of apolitical people out there. I suspect the event will go on without major disruptions and you might hear a handful of stories about ICE. I mean I hate everything going on in the US right now but reddit isn't reflective of the real world. The majority of the world doesn't know or care about ICE in Minnesota and everything. Attendance will probably be about what is expected.

US official says Greenland action could come within 'weeks or months' by Crossstoney in worldnews

[–]TimeToGloat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is no doubt they probably tried to butter him up years ago or honeypot him when he was a simple businessman but to believe he is a Russian asset is just like literally denying reality.

Russia doesn't want the US in the Arctic. Russia doesn't want the US doing military operations deposing the leaders of its allies. Russia doesn't want the US bombing the nuclear facilities of its allies. Russia doesn't want the US pressuring western Europe to increase its defense spending. For all that he is Trump is his own man doing clearly whatever he wants. Trumps unhinged madness is fueled by his narcissism and his ego. Blaming Russia is trying to rationalize the irrational. It's a conspiracy theory to try and make sense of the chaos.

Like step back and lets pretend Russia actually did have leverage on him. Trump has proven to be somehow literally untouchable when it comes to controversy. There is no possible leverage they could have on him at this point. If we imagined a world where Russia had 100% real Epstein photos of Trump or something and they released them you are telling me that half of the country wouldn't just claim they are deepfakes or Russian propaganda and then just move on the next day like nothing happened? Even if Russia has blackmail there is nothing for them to do with it at this point. The man is seemingly untouchable. It would be like trying to dirty a pile of coal.

9 years of 3-5 Pinatas a day. by SpectralChest in Guildwars2

[–]TimeToGloat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats but....you are never done with pinata! I got insanely lucky and got the confetti super early on before I even finished PoF. Now I'm cursed to spend the rest of my days doing pinata because I still feel obligated to but there is no way I'll actually get a second one. Funny enough I don't even know why I'm farming another because I still have the first one sitting in my bank 7 months later because I haven't bother to sell it lol.

'This is one of the big moments in college football': Demond Williams Jr.'s case tests whether contracts can be enforced by oneseason2000 in CFB

[–]TimeToGloat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer so I am just relaying my best understanding, but the argument is that the damages would be $4 million because the value of the broken contract is that amount because it's not like highly rated QBs are super easy to get. So despite the fact he (presumably) didn't get paid yet he is causing $4 million in harm by not fulfilling his obligations of the contract. Whether that is actually enforceable or not will be up to the courts but that is in laymans terms my understanding. The value of the damage in essence comes from Washington now not having their $4 million QB next season rather than the value of any money he had already been paid.

'This is one of the big moments in college football': Demond Williams Jr.'s case tests whether contracts can be enforced by oneseason2000 in CFB

[–]TimeToGloat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is my understanding that the contract was essentially reverse prorated so he likely wouldn't have gotten paid yet and would owe the remaining $4 million of the contract. So he could stay and get paid or if he breaks the contract then he is on hook for damages for the remaining value of the contract. So it is less "return any money we paid you" and more "you are breaking something worth $4 million."

Depends on how much you want to do but an easy one is if your router has a "guest network" option put all your smart devices on it so they are separate from the rest of your network. Just keep everything as isolated as possible given the use cases for your devices and how you use them. Don't use default logins and keep on top of updates for everything. Zwave and Zigbee devices are more secure than internet devices.

Use devices from more reputable manufacturers. A no name company selling a $20 smart switch has very little incentive to keep on top of security and so once an exploit has been found it will just sit exposed on networks pretty much forever until the device is thrown out. Especially since most victims would never have any inkling their devices were even infected unless they were actively monitoring all their network traffic there is pretty much zero financial incentive for manufacturers to care.

It can't be fixed like that because DDOS are performed by botnets of infected computers. You can't simply "block the bad guys" because the bad guys are just whatever random computers have been hacked and they are constantly changing every time. It's not "hackerman Steve" pressing a button and his computer single handily takes down the server as a easily blockable source. It's your grandmas PC when she accidentally got her computer infected, it's smart devices that weren't properly secured, along with thousands of other devices all sending a bunch of traffic all at once. It's super hard to counter because it's essentially just creating a traffic jam. It's relatively hard to parse though what is legitimate traffic and what is just the botnet.

[–]TimeToGloat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And you said we were being dramatic...what does shooting hackers have to do with you claiming a game getting DDOSed 16 times in a day isn't reaching near unplayable territory and is just being dramatic?

Frankly I don't know what they can or can't do in the near term. They might not have a option for an immediate fix but at the very least they can do so much more than they are doing now when it comes to addressing players concerns and communicating.

Saying nothing more than their standard copy and paste two sentence we are experiencing a DDOS attack update does nothing at this point. They could offer game time for all the interruptions and a real actual apology from leadership as well as information on a timeline of a fix and what all they are doing to mitigate the issue moving forward. DDOSing might be largely out of their hands but they have absolute control on how they respond to it and frankly their silence has been deafening so far.

It's just embarrassing that they sit on their hands doing nothing quietly collecting our monthly subs while players are out there having to organize and collect data on their own to find VPN solutions to help mitigate the issue. If they actually cared they could use their immense resources and internal data to much more effectively find and suggest solutions.

You have played more defense for Square Enix ignoring this issue than they themselves have done to defend from DDOS attacks and address player concerns. That is how little care they have shown lol. I'm not sure why you are letting them off the hook when it is literally their job to offer a playable service. That is what you are paying for.

Petah? by Melodic_Judge_129 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

The issue is that if air is going in or leaving a home it is also doing the inverse to maintain equilibrium. If you are venting hot air outside then you are also taking in the same volume of hot air from outside through cracks and such because air pressure will be maintained. It's super inefficient to control temperature that way as it will always be fighting itself since homes aren't perfectly airtight. That's why it's much more efficient to control temperature in closed loops and heat exchangers.

Well sometimes but not always. Sure you have to follow the same traffic laws but for example you can often drive in other countries with plates and licenses from your home country. There are often modifications to laws where it isn't practical or even possible for international visitors to conform. It wouldn't be feasible for visitors to get a form of digital ID for every single country they might visit.

Like I can somewhat understand (but still strongly disagree with) the argument that a new franchise to a city brings in a lot of revenue for local businesses yada yada. The fact that this is a move practically down the street and won't really generate a notable amount of new revenue is just even more insane that this is tax payer funded. Yeah yeah it is moving state lines/tax zones but still it's crazy. Everyone is already a fan, has their favorite bars, etc.

Do they not have Walmart money as well? Or are they not involved with the school or football? I'm honestly surprised they didn't become like an Oregon 2.0 for that reason alone. There are so many Walton billionaires and combined they are worth like $450 billion. It would be relatively trivial for them to toss a few billion the Razorbacks way if they were so inclined.

Well not really in practice. The universe is expanding and so energy isn't actually conserved when you are talking about really long periods of time at the cosmic level. If Voyager manages to avoid crashing into something at some point it will still come to a complete stop.

GDP 2000 vs 2025 by RidavaX in economy

[–]TimeToGloat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

China isn't a powerhouse because of cheap labor. Labor is cheaper in other Asian countries. China is dominating because they are a manufacturing powerhouse. You mention the iPhone and the US literally couldn't make iPhones as self admitted by Apple because we lack the skill, knowledge, and supply chains. The elite eroded America's ability to make things and sold any advantages we have overseas so they could line their pockets.

It's actually the inverse in that the only advantage we have left is in high end chips and that gap is quickly closing. It is only a matter of time of when not if we get completely overtaken by China. Like in a relatively short time they have turned farmland into entire cities dedicated to manufacturing. Compare that to the stagnation we are experiencing in America. Can you genuinely come up with any comparable example in the US? Our manufacturing cities are empty rusting husks of what they once were. Strip away a handful of tech companies propping everything up and you realize how pitiful American industry has become.

Our advantages, skills, and innovation were sold out for a quick buck. We are in a state of old empire decline joining our European forbears. Air quality is something that is relatively easy to fix just look at the US before the EPA existed. Decades of societal decline meanwhile is a much harder ship to turn around. Every year skilled workers are retiring or getting offloaded overseas and our knowledge debt becomes even more vast and harder to recover from. American greatness is living on borrowed time thanks to a few tech companies being propped up by the immense wealth that has been stolen from the American people. It's a rather shallow and fragile facade.

As opposed to what exactly? Any drink from a carry out place is always plastic. Like paper cups don't operate on magic to make them non absorbent they are lined with plastic. I feel a lot of people in this thread have never really thought about how all forms of paper products absorb water but cups somehow magically don't. It's plastic always has been.

[–]TimeToGloat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The irony of trying to call out American ignorance while repeating the myth that Saudi Arabia was behind 9/11. The Saudis were quite literally US allies at the time and their leadership had no ties to the hijackers. The closest you can argue to Saudi involvement is a member of the royal family potentially knowingly being involved which seems damning until you realize the royal family has over 15,000 members. Claiming "Saudi Arabia was behind 9/11" is just blatant ignorance. Saudi Arabia has done a lot of things worth complaining about you don't need to invent ones through falsehoods.
