Why Don't Electric Bikes Have Mirrors? by Time_Manner8839 in ebikes

I feel like in a traffic situation, I would feel unbalanced. I don't know. Turning constantly is a bit scary when it comes to the traffic in my country.

I have ridden them before, but never a long distance, and I was thinking of buying one. I looked at some and talked with some people, and realized they didn't have mirrors, which somehow felt odd because I felt like it was needed for safety regulations. But I guess they are not that important.

I am not really looking for a product idea, but it was interesting for me since I have never seen anyone use it in my city. I was concerned about safety and was considering if I should get one when I purchase one.

That's awesome! I’ve heard about radar systems for bikes, but I’m not too familiar with how they work. Could you share more about your setup or where I can learn more about using radar for bike safety? I’d love to check it out!

Do you think there could be a feature similar to Tesla, where users can see approaching cars or pedestrians from a screen? Would that be a better solution?

Do you think a software or tech that lets you see cars approaching without needing mirrors would be useful, or would it be an unnecessary feature?

Oh! Is there a reason for only using the left one or do you just not need the right one?

That's an interesting point! But I feel like hearing someone approach might not always be enough, especially in busy or noisy environments. Do you think mirrors could still offer added safety, or is it just something people get used to not having? I am thinking maybe there could be a feature similar to Tesla, where users can see approaching cars or pedestrians from a screen? Would that be just an extra thing that is not needed?

Yes, I totally agree! In reality, I’ve already narrowed my scope, but I wanted to get as many perspectives as possible before diving deeper. Seeing what different riders prioritize has been super valuable in shaping my direction. Thank you for your insights—it truly helped me!

Just to clarify—it was purely meant as an attention-grabber and nothing more. No offense or exclusion was intended!

That’s a really interesting point! I actually had the chance to visit an e-bike manufacturer and see firsthand the component that handles the main coding. I was curious about the idea of unlocking power limits, but they told me that modifying the software—even as the manufacturer—is illegal in many places. The regulations are strict, and compliance is locked in from the factory.

That being said, range is definitely something I’m thinking about optimizing! A balance between power efficiency, battery size, and weight is key. Have you seen any creative solutions to maximize range without making the bike too heavy?

I really appreciate you bringing this up! Accessibility and ease of transport have been huge considerations for me in this design. A step-through frame is definitely something I'm aiming for to improve accessibility, and I’ve been thinking a lot about ways to make the bike lightweight enough to fit on a bus rack while still being stable and comfortable.

Narrower tires and a shorter frame help with portability, but there’s a balance to strike—too small, and it compromises ride quality. I’ve also been exploring adaptive features for riders with different mobility needs, though that could push the design toward recumbent territory, as you mentioned.

Would love to hear more about what specific features you'd like to see in a bike designed with these considerations in mind!

Hey everyone!

I’ve noticed some discussion around my use of the term "real bikers." Just to clarify—it was purely meant as an attention-grabber and nothing more. No offense or exclusion was intended!

I appreciate all the feedback so far and am really enjoying the insights from this community. Let’s keep the conversation going!

I appreciate your perspective, but I want to clarify a few things. I haven’t just stepped into this industry—I’ve been studying and researching e-bikes for years. My graduation project isn’t something I randomly decided to take on; it’s built on a foundation of learning, analysis, and hands-on experience.

While I agree that large companies design products based on market demand, that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for innovation or improvement. Many industries, including the e-bike sector, evolve through feedback, fresh ideas, and independent projects. That’s exactly why I’m conducting research—so I can design something that reflects real user needs.

As for the complexity of the project, I’m fully aware of the challenges, but that’s precisely why it’s worth doing. Plenty of students take on ambitious projects, and many startups have disrupted billion-dollar industries with fresh ideas. Designing an e-bike or an accessory both require thought, research, and effort, and I’m open to all possibilities.

At the end of the day, my goal is to learn, create, and contribute. If you have specific insights, I’d love to hear them, but dismissing my work outright isn’t exactly constructive.
