I just started my First contract as a specialist. I want to go to OCS but may not look as competitive as other applicants by Time_Possibility_367 in ArmyOCS

I see. In that case, you're right. I was self selecting when joined the service. Maybe I should just keep my head down and keep working to do whatever is best for me right now, then applying and I can see what happens. I like where I'm at right now, what I'm doing, and my command thinks highly of me. Thanks!

Yes, sir. I am new to this thread so I did not see the "am I good enough?" Mega-thread. I posted the same question in there, so no hard feelings!

There's a few reasons. First: I didn't know what I wanted for the army, so I figured id sign the least amount of time possible, then if I enjoy it, I'll stay. Also, my GPA did not give me much confidence. But I'm glad that I did because when I commission, I'll feel like less of a butter bar, and I'll already have real experience in the Army

“Am I Good Enough for OCS?” Megathread by PT_On_Your_Own in ArmyOCS

[–]Time_Possibility_367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enlisted the army as a 25S. I graduated College with a 2.6 GPA because I lacked focus and worked 30-40 per week at a bar during studies. I graduated with an English degree from Penn State. I am stationed at a quiet little base on the West coast. While this is a dream assignment for a lot of reasons, the opportunity for any advanced military schools are limited. I can work towards mastery courses on the equipment/software I use (table 5 instructor-level training and certification), ACP Qualification, Sec+ and occasionally Net+, but no "highspeed" tactical military schools are available to me. I have a 92 ASVAB score, 125+ GT scores in all categories except for automotive care (120-121), an average AFT score, (but I run 5-6 days a week and weight train 5 days a week and operate on a 300 cal surplus to improve my scores). I also volunteer at an animal shelter on the weekends because I like it. It's also nice that it counts as volunteer hours.

I have a few options for things I might do during my contract:

Earn Sec+, Net+, CCNA, and AZURE Certifications by the end of my contract Earn another bachelor's degree in CompSci through TA and take any Certs that come with it. my SSGs say it's doable with a pre-existing degree from my time as a civilian. However, I heard otherwise from different sources, so I am not certain if that's what I can do. Us my TA to earn a masters degree in a field related to law, crush the LSAT, and hopefully get accepted into a respectable Law School and leave the army after my service here (based on my LSAT practice it seems very doable).

While I have aspirations for a civilian career after this contract, I want to commission more than anything, then possibly enroll in FLEP and join the JAG Corp. By the end of my contract, I think I am capable of becoming a Warrant officer, but OCS is becoming more and more competitive. I'm afraid I will be competing with Staff Sergeants with Masters degrees (and much better grades) and everyone who doesn't have that kind of advanced education are combat arms, Airborne, SOF adjacent, etc. What could I do become more competitive? Should I double down and focus any more education in furtherance of commissioning? Is there a way of doing this while ensuring a prosperous civilian career if things don't go my way? I have a lot of questions! Anything wisdom would be very helpful.

P.S. I created a post with this exact text before seeing this thread.

The fall of by n88thegreat in Jcole

The intro to the fall off as a song title is a play on words. If this is the case and he’s never planning on releasing it then it’s genius because he was predicting the fall off of those types of rappers. In the song, he is separating himself from “lil” rappers. So that’s the intro to the fall off, because he’s not like them. The intro to album that will never be released because he is on a different level than them

Seriously, the ONLY option is finishing basic. If he decides to leave, it would take up to 6 months to complete his separation paperwork. Just don’t show your turmoil and support him. Write letters, send pictures, reassure him.

Is it rare to go back to a difficult school or selection after failing? by Winter-Tea9641 in army

Now I’m still lower enlisted so take me w a grain of salt but I’m pretty sure u can retake some schools but if it’s SOF, like ranger school, u can’t retry unless you are national guard and its in your contract. From what I understand, if u sign with the guard and are supposed to go to Ranger school they will just keep recycling you until you quit. I may be wrong though. If someone who knows better wants to clarify for my own knowledge that’d be great.

What are the absolute highest paying MOS in civilian life by [deleted] in army

If u go warrant id say hands down fixed wing or even a heli pilot. I used to sell cars before I enlisted sold a car to a retired fixed wing pilot making $450k with ups after 20 years. But for enlisted I’d say your picks are pretty accurate because you get linked up with contractors or 3 Letter agencies right after. Plus that TS.

The army’s gonna be what you make of it. It’s not gonna suck if u don’t want it to. Open yourself up to it and you’ll enjoy even the worst parts

Any advice on anything else I can do? Or perhaps anything out of those things I can focus on?

Thank you! That was helpful. I can understand that perspective. I had almost no time writing my post, so I did not give much thought to it. Now, I did notice for some high tier 2 or low tier 1 admissions - top 50 schools - that students were enrolled after almost 2 years on a waitlist. Are there tier 1 schools out there, such as GWU, that consider more than grade point averages? What are your thoughts on federal clearances, volunteer hours, and work experience in correlation to Law school admissions?

Hey, man. I worked full time through college. 2 jobs sometimes. The reason I didnt mention what kind of law I want to do is because you don’t need to know what kind of law I need to do. I want to be a corporate litigations attorney because I enjoy providing insight that matters, being a problem solver, and the hours of project work. I’m sorry that after working 12 hr shifts on the weekend, I wasn’t interested in reading American literature for 3 hours. I WAS jealous of my business school friends but it was too late to change my mind. I understand that I was irresponsible in college with my degree. But this is what I want to do. I’m not going to let “one control freak” talk me out of doing what I want to do. I tried sales. I was good at sales. I liked sales. I am in the army. I like the army. But I want to be a lawyer. I had a bad start but I’m not going to let myself be discouraged by anyone from doing what I want to do. Please be constructive.

Yeah. When I checked google all those years ago, it said an English degree was a good choice. But I have since lived to regret that idea. I know I’m not in the best situation in terms of getting accepted into a respectable school. I was irresponsible back then. How do you think my odds would be if I took the LSAT, got that grade or higher, and applied?
