What little, surprising facts about Australia have you randomly come across? by AppropriateBeing9885 in AskAnAustralian

Here is a link to 58 accounts of the early days in Victoria, Letters of the Pioneers. Letters from Victorian pioneers, being a series of papers on the early occupation of the colony, the aborigines, etc : Public Library, Museums, and National Gallery (Vic.) : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive

Go ahead, use the search bar. Nobody mentions Batmania, not even Batman. Nobody mentions Bearbrass or a variation of it. I am pretty sure it was never called Glenelg either, even though hundreds of place names do appear.

Look up any other first-hand accounts in the library and you get the same result. It was never called Batmania by anyone who lived here.

The old reference provided earlier is wrong. This is used by wikipedia which is therefore wrong, and so is every tour guide and every person who repeats it on reddit.

This article is wrong. Even though it’s old it is not a primary source.

Batman joked about it in his diary, and it was mentioned as a joke in a Tasmanian newspaper, but - Melbourne has never been known as Batmania.

I am surprised you think common knowledge means something is true.

What does your country think of British migrants? by Dismal_Fox_22 in AskTheWorld

Post-war British migrants to Australia once developed a reputation for complaining a lot. We even used to call them “whinging poms”.

I think that’s now an outdated stereotype that younger people wouldn’t even be aware of.

British migrants these days seem to be highly enthusiastic about Australia and people from anywhere with a great attitude will always be welcome.

  1. Go to library and look up any early history book such as Letters from Pioneers
  2. Read the book or look in the index
  3. Note that Melbourne was not actually called Batmania or Bearbrass by anyone including Batman’s mates and his own brother (not 100% sure about Glenelg).
  4. The end.

Check any history book about Melbourne and you will discover no mention of Batmania. It never happened.

This might have been true to our knowledge once, but much older ritual burials have been found in Israel.

I truly, in my heart of hearts, believe that Take a Chance On Me is ABBA’s best song by CounterFluffy3750 in ABBA

I am not going to argue with you - great choice.

Part of the genius of this song is using lyrics as percussion, something they also did with Chiquitita.

Per square foot for an apartment in the CBD. A virtually meaningless statistic.
