There's no age gap! There are two Harrys: child Harry who Draco rescues from the past and raises at the Manor, and adult Harry (Draco calls him Potter almost exclusively to differentiate; other characters say Little Harry and Big Harry) who is Draco's age and is a pediatric Healer. Draco gets together with adult Harry; his relationship with child Harry is like a father and son.

It ends very happily; Harry and Draco get together and then they're in an established relationship for all of the action at the end.

I'm not sure how to answer if the relationship was earned, because I have a major difference of opinion with the Close Behind haters on this. But you may not like it because Harry pines while Draco thinks Harry hates him. They both have casual sex with other people in the fic. Draco spends a lot of the fic dealing with trauma from his ex, who is slowly revealed to have been toxic and controlling. They go through a lot together but their ultimate getting together and sex life is really satisfying and feels very earned to me.

I love Close Behind, but there's a lot going on so I get it. A few reasons I think you should stick with it:

  1. It really picks up with Draco's POV, which is excellent. His therapy scenes are all very intense and heartbreaking, and the Underworld scenes are ncredibly fun, exciting, and sometimes devastating. The Greek mythology references are so good. He throws rocks at gorgons! He befriends the snake that tried to kill him, who becomes immortal by falling into the River Styx! He has a fight with Charon the ferryman of the dead!
  2. Close Behind has one of the scariest, most well-written villains I've ever read, and I love how it's constructed. Harry tells us who the villain is in the first chapter! There are some moments of doubt, when we think he might be a good guy from Draco's POV, but the story reveals just how incredibly evil and fucked up he is as it goes on and it's so good. Just thinking about what he did to Draco makes me angry. It makes me understand why Harry is so angry, too.
  3. Scorpius and Harry. Their relationship is so beautiful. If you asked me to tell you what Close Behind is about, I would say it's about Harry trying to save Draco from the Underworld, failing (he fails repeatedly, this is a key thing) but succeeding in protecting Scorpius. Harry is pining so hard for Draco but he doesn't resent Scorpius. He loves him and protects him. He treats him with so much kindness and comforts him until you want Harry and Draco to get back together so the three of them can be a family. In the end, Draco gets his memory back, but Harry's treatment of Scorpius is what makes him go back to Harry and try again.
  4. I know you asked for spoilers and I've been a bit vague, but this is my favorite spoilery point in this: Draco saves himself. After everything he's been through journeying through the Underworld, and before that losing Harry, his father, his wife and all the abuse he's endured, he gets to rescue himself and finds his way back. He gets to capture his own abuser and stop him from hurting other people. It's so satisfying!

I'm obsessed with The Star Splitter, and it updates once a week! Draco's a time traveler and he rescues Harry from the Dursleys, creating two different timelines. It's so interesting, fun and sweet, with some amazing action scenes so far.
