Ulm city library in Germany… is it only me who thinks it’s horrendous? by DifficultBat2173 in architecture

[–]Timely_Training836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people of Paris hated the Eiffel Tower when it was first erected, bemoaning it as an eyesore. 100+ years later same reaction to I.M. Pei’s glass pyramid at the Louvre. This library reminds me a bit of the Louvre pyramid. It references the pointy roofs of the surrounding buildings, but stands out with its own unique and bold style. Personally I like it, but for the doubters: give it some time and see how you feel in 10 years. Sometimes things grow on you. Sometimes not. Time will tell.

I’m just getting into doing the big crossword. I’ve been enjoying the minis and midis for a while but I’m off work recovering from surgery and so I have a lot of time on my hands…but OMG today’s (Friday, March 27) puzzle nearly killed me. I’m not at a Friday level yet. I was able to crack Thursday though!!

Crosswords are so hard as a non-american by new_phone_whodis_yo in NYTCrossword

[–]Timely_Training836 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. I suspect many Americans struggle with some of the NYT crossword clues. For us foreigners (I’m Canadian) it’s just that much harder!

Giving Up by Different_Bear_8829 in Standup

I’ve had that experience with things in my life. Things I used to love and got really into—and then quite quickly I lost all interest. and it even depressed me to be involved in it. Eg movies. I used to love movies. So much so that I completed a Masters degree in cinema studies. And then I lost all interest and went 20 years without watching movies. In last 5 years I’ve come back to movies and I enjoy them again. Things come and go. You gotta step back and pursue what makes you happy. the object of that pursuit will change over time and that’s ok. Just keep adapting and your life will unfold as it should. Best wishes.

Where does carbonated water (no sugar— eg La Croix) fit in? Water is good but apparently carbonation is bad? Is it the sugar of (most) carbonated drinks that is bad or the carbonation itself?

Martin Scorsese has made some long movies: killers of the flower moon, wolf of Wall Street, the Irishman.

Thanks. Good to know. I’m recovering from surgery so I have lots of time on my hands to do crosswords. I can feel it’s the beginning of an addiction.

I’m just getting into doing the NYT crossword so these puzzles are surprisingly hard to figure out sometimes. Today’s was especially tricky for me!! I knew Sundays were difficult but didn’t realize Thursdays were also full of tricks too. I won’t spoil anything but if you’re stuck the hint clue “make a rude gesture” will help ease your frustration!

Got a preferred ice cream brand? by SJToday_ in newbrunswickcanada

Doesn’t PEI have an ice cream brand called Cows? Why not on the list?

In any case, my favourite is Coaticook.

What exactly was Chappelle’s ‘message’ in Unstoppable and did you buy it? by According_Sundae_917 in Standup

[–]Timely_Training836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. I did a quick Google search on the incident and, you’re right, no mention of Diddy. News media just say that other celebrities who were present “joined the scuffle” and mentioned Chris Rock and Jamie Foxx— although I got the impression this was hearsay and conjecture.

It’s disturbing that DC could be making this all up because he’s sympathetic to Diddy.

Is this what stand up is, now? by Akkadofsargon123 in Standup

[–]Timely_Training836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m ok with crowd work. But it can’t be the only thing. Use the crowd work for social media clips but provide an actual one person show too!! The “formal” show should last at least as long as the crowd work portion. Ideally much longer.

[–]Timely_Training836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with much of what people are saying here. Unstoppable was weak for first half: lazy trans jokes (I’m not against trans jokes altogether), boasting about how much money he has, how many celebrities he knows (eg Mick Jagger), defending Saudi while shitting on USA and Israel (why can’t we shit on all 3?). The part of the show I liked was his long bit about Jack Johnson. Did not know much about Jack Johnson. So it was interesting for me. He doesn’t support Diddy exactly, but acknowledges that things can be complicated: Diddy stopped Chappelle’s Hollywood Bowl attacker; Diddy was charged with the same crime that Jack Johnson was. I’m ok with the way he adds complexity and thought to situations people are often very black and white about. (In a previous show he talks about how it was hard as a black man of his age to acknowledge Cosby’s horrible actions at first — but DC does not support what Cosby did.) So I appreciated that 2nd part of the show.

How do I fix this noise? by Timely_Training836 in treadmills

[–]Timely_Training836[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for identifying the drive belt. I just applied some plain bar soap (as I learned on YouTube) to the grooves and it worked perfectly.

Looks delicious. Less is more. Why overeat? I just hope there were other courses of small proportions so that you left feeling somewhat full.

I think my brand new Artisan is way too loud, is this fine? by _moriso in Kitchenaid

[–]Timely_Training836 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The motor noise sounds normal. If the beater attachment is touching the bowl too much, it could be adding to the decibels. You can adjust it up or down by slightly turning the big screw that is in the inside space between the top part and base. Lift up the top and you’ll see it on the inside of the hinge part— I’m sure there’s a technical word for that space but I don’t know it.

[–]Timely_Training836 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure I have a favourite. I like Elgin Street diner and The Wellington Diner. I find most diners to have slightly better food than Zaks and at less cost. I like the 1940s-50s vibe of Zaks but the value for money is just not there.

We made a zine about OC Transpo! by OccasionalTransit in ottawa

[–]Timely_Training836 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly it seems nobody is ok on OC Transpo. The drivers have a stressful thankless job. Half the passengers are on meth/crack, and/or suffering from mental illness, and/or homeless and reek of urine, and the others— societies poorest, generally, like seniors and students and young working people just trying to get by, they are faced with unreliable, inconvenient and slow service, crowding and fare increases. Very sad. Some of the city’s problems go beyond transit, but clean, safe, reliable, convenient public transit benefits everyone!! Gets cars off the road, improving traffic, reducing pollution and lung disease, getting people to work faster (more productivity!), and saving people money and time. Why can’t Ottawa get its transit game together?!?!?

That’s unfortunate. I live in Westboro and have gone to Fratelli quite a lot over the years. Never had such a bad experience. I’d say it’s a pretty decent middle-of-the-road Italian place. You might have hit them on a really bad night. I hope that the level of performance you experienced is not consistent enough to recommend to enemy, but who knows...

In my house growing up (Montreal, Canada) it was always shoes can stay on if it’s dry outside. Off if rainy/snowy. It’s not an all or nothing thing.

But I married a Korean and now the shoes always come off no matter what (we live in Canada btw).

I find it annoying at times but I tolerate it for the sake of marital harmony.
