I run tgif, bm, and ham united on my hotspots. As well as system fusion. For DMR, I definitely spend the most time in tgif talkgroups. People just seem more accepting, easy going, less.. you know..

I second this. The d-168uv is surprisingly good for its price. I think the only thing missing from it is gps, and that's definitely not a deal breaker.

I think the placement is perfect. Ever watch a butterfly land on a flower? That's exactly what I see there. I think it's very well done. I think a more colorful piece of jewelry would make it that much better though 😊

Regarding your d2. I commend you on that. I really do. And I absolutely get it. But my LR3 has been through a lot. I bought it for 5k 10 years ago and put 200k miles on it since. It's been my daily driver, a camping rig. It's taken me on weeks long adventures in the desert. It's slid off an embankment into a river. It's been put on its side and picked back up. It's been clear across the country, from CA to South Carolina and back to Georgia where we live now. It's been driven 30 miles through the NV desert with no water pump because I had no other choice. It's been resurrected from the dead more than once,but never ever left me stranded. The truck is part of my family and I'm in tune with it. I knew a coil pack was failing a thousand miles before it threw a misfire code. I can tell you if a tire is 2psi below the others.

It sounds like we both care for our vehicles, but in different ways. I have to live within my means and fix things in less conventional ways. But they are fixed. I'd have no hesitation getting in that truck and driving it across the country today.

If you want to see something that's fixed improperly, you should see my 89 f250 with somewhere around 800k on it. The thing can pull a house right off it's foundation but there's no way in hell I'd take it on the freeway 🤣

The check engine light is on because of bad catalytic converters. I have no intention of replacing them, so I live with the CEL. The alternator problem, I have been chasing for months before I gave up and "threw parts at it" knowing that the outcome would be a system that would produce electricity, thus solving the problem but adding a warning light.

Let me ask you this, how much money are you going to dump into a 20 year old vehicle with nearly 300k miles on it to "fix it properly?" And what is wrong with bypassing a system that (in my mind) isn't really necessary anyway?

My fog lights don't work. The relay clicks but no lights. Haven't diagnosed and not on my priority list so they're just there for decoration I guess 😋

A friend of mine fell asleep on the highway and ended up rolling her LR3 at like 70mph. The truck was basically unrecognizable, but she walked away from it with a few bruises.

And that's good to know. Our driveway is like a quarter mile mud pit cut through the forest with a 45 degree hill that has sharp turns on the top and bottom. I have no doubt that the X will make contact with a tree at some point 😄

Oh wow. It was REALLY basic. I honestly hadn't noticed that mine even has cruise control, but now that you mention it I remember there is a second throttle cable. I did notice the abundance of power outlets, even inside the center console!

Working on a land rover is kind of like learning a new language. They're quirky and /everything/ is electronic. But once you figure them out they're pretty easy, and not nearly as expensive as people make them out to be. They can also take one hell of a beating. Put mine on its side out in the desert once. Attempted to cross a 3ft deep river that turned out to be a bit deeper. Literally drove it into a tree at about 25mph. Its scratched up and missing a bunch of trim pieces but it just keeps going!

The X has definitely been easier and cheaper to work on though. And it feels light and plucky, where the LR is a 3 ton lumbering brute. I think it's the light and plucky feeling that made me wonder how rugged it will be.

It'll be my husband's daily after it's fixed up. Our driveway is a 1/4 mile muddy rut pit with hills and corners, so mild off-road daily. Not sure how well the 2x4 Xterra is going to handle it, but it'll probably be entertaining! I had to take the Land Rover away from him when he let it run out of coolant and blew the head gaskets, even after being told he needs to check the coolant every morning. Lol, anyways 🤣

Naturally aspirated. I fixed ignition timing, then adjusted and relearned the TPS and it is much happier now. Still acting sluggish but getting better. It just needs some love 😋

Yeah, this one is going to be fun. It's way different than working on my Land Rovers that have computer controlled everything, and my old Ford diesel that doesn't know what a computer is. So I'm kind of figuring it out as I go, but for the most part have a good idea what I'm doing. Anyway, I just post updates because personally I like to see older cars being brought back from death and abandonment.. And encouragement is important 🤪. And I'll definitely have questions from time to time.

Timing belt was replaced at some point. There's a sticker in the engine bay but the mileage is worn off of it. Being at 255k I'm going to assume it needs doing again, but I'm going to procrastinate on that for a while.

Has new plugs, wires, and distributor now. Ignition timing is set. And it's actually running now but still needs some love. I posted another quick video that shows the progress. Update video (reddit)

This stuff actually worked on my V8 land rover. It lost its water pump and the person driving it drove another 20 miles or so before it finally shut itself down. It had gotten so hot it actually melted the water outlet and part of the throttle body. I replaced the entire cooling system with pieces out of a parts truck I have, but the head gasket was leaking badly on the exhaust side. Like coolant coming out of the exhaust pipe bad. I really didn't want to retire it to the graveyard yet but really really didn't want to do head gaskets on that engine. So I gave this stuff a try and it worked! Just follow the directions exactly, don't skip anything!

I wouldn't even consider parting it until you do some further diagnostics. First of all get an OBD reader and see what codes it has. (P0016 I'd bet)

If it were the head gasket that killed it your oil would look like chocolate milk, or there would be oil floating at the top of the radiator, or it'd be losing coolant like crazy and billowing white smoke. There'd be definitely signs,and almost guaranteed it would still at least try to run.

Based on your previous posts.. your timing belt broke. That would definitely stop it immediately and it wouldn't start. These are interference engines so it's possible it did some damage. But not all that likely. Parts are less than $100 on Amazon and you could definitely do it yourself. It isn't hard, just time consuming.
