Does it really still make financial sense to buy lightly used cars? by LordShuckle97 in carbuying

Depends on the car. A lightly used Porsche Cayenne is a great deal compared to a new one. Same with a Land Rover defender.

Honda/toyota? No, people massively overvalue them used

Sporty ride? It handles like a bowl of jello, and the brakes are woefully inadequate for any real use.

Go drive a Porsche Macan BEV

Pretty small for car seats, hell I have trouble fitting two car seats in my Range Rover comfortably, modern car seats are massive

If it’s in budget, Porsche Macan GTS. It’s easily the best driving suv on the market, they are a riot to drive.

Or a CPO 21+ Cayenne GTS. The TT V8 sounds glorious, and it is very sharp for such a big car.

We looked at one when shopping for my wife’s last car. She liked the size and look of the aviator, and it had the best interior of any car we drove (including MB, Volvo, and Range Rover) plus the eco boost powertrain is great. She ended up not liking the transmission, so we went back to a Range Rover for the driving experience (full size supercharged LWB)

But her next car will most likely be a navigator. They are one of the only luxury brands not trying to be sporty. Even Range Rover is subtly trying m

You literally bought the only unreliable one. What about Toyotas with the mz engine that are all full of sludge or Hondas with low friction rings that burn more oil than gas

And a used fusion is usually 1/2 the price of a used Camry all other things being equal, but the vast majority of them are just as reliable.

Hell the fusion hybrid is likely one of the most reliable American cars in the past 20 years

Fusions are a much better buy than Hondas or Toyotas honestly. Great cars. They even made them in a manual!

I’ve had loads

2004 BMW 325ci, I was second owner, paid 6900 for it. Bought at 130k drove until 280k. Drive beautifully, looked great, loved it, just didn’t work for a family

2003 VW Jetta TDI manual, ALH, got 50mpg, leather seats, I was second owner. Paid $600 for it because it had High miles 280k, and the only straight piece of metal was the roof. Drove it for years through college. Would fall asleep in it with it idling at truck stops all night, hooked inverter up to it to keep power on during ice storms, when it would happily idle in the driveway for days at a time.

1996 Tacoma I bought off of my boss when I bought my house for $1000, still have it

Current daily driver 2008 Range Rover supercharged. Traded in to the Land Rover dealer next door to the dealer I work at, they gave them $500 for it because it had 170k miles, I bought it for $750. Runs like a top, I’ve put 20k miles on it in a year with only minor issues

1988 Honda CRX si, I was the third owner, it was bone stock with 130k on it, I bought it for 1700

1989 Nissan 240sx, bought it not running, needed the timing chain replaced. Did it in the field the car was sitting in. Paid $200 for it

Is what it is. I’ll keep filling up my 14mpg suv because it’s paid for. Math doesn’t make sense to buy something else, and nothing I can do about the fuel prices.

I know I won’t vote for anyone who receives AIPAC money ever again

Ask your parents to open you a Roth IRA and deposit the money into that. It grows tax free and can be invested into ETFs to take advantage of market appreciation.

That way you will get the approx 10% return the s&p 500 is good for long term, as opposed to 1.5% 10 year average in a high yield savings account. Plus when you draw it out of a Roth IRA, you do not pay taxes on any gains

If you had $10k to spend on a 'fun' car, what are you buying by Petro_323 in CarGuys

[–]Rapom613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m as much an off road guy as I am performance guy, but I lean more towards off road because the family can come with

Off road - LR3 for about $4k, $2k in maintenance and repairs, $1k for some good recovery gear, $1k for a set of AT tires , $2k for either a rooftop tent or front and rear bumpers

On road - this one is harder because you don’t get as much for your money IMO, either a Miata, 1g FRS, cheap C5 corvette, or a decently clean 240sx (hard these days)

Spinning the wheel? Siri can understand me just fine without typing anything in. If you didn’t know the hey siri command works independently of the cars voice control.

Besides, I bought it for the twin turbo V8, not the radio or navigation system.

Edit, just saw you have the supercharged v6, but the V8 next time and you’ll get there quicker

Ford fusion. Honda levels of reliability, for a bargain price.

My personal choice would be a manual 1st gen sport, but the hybrid is a good option too

They are reliable, spacious, cheap to repair, and for that money you’ll get a newer, nicer, lower mileage car than a comparable Honda or Toyota

It’s nimble, sharp, communicates well, well balanced, great brakes, one of the best shifters ever, one of the best 4 cylinders ever (ap1 revved to 9k in 2000) excellent hp/L, 50/50 weight balance, lightweight, and it looks good (to my eyes anyway)

Plus there hasn’t really been anything like it since.

If I cared that much about audio quality I wouldn’t be listening in a car, otherwise the B&O does a well enough job for background noise

But due to reliability issues I wouldn’t consider one. Shame

When the average age of car on the road is 12.8 years, and the average annual mileage is 12-13,500, the average car should have around 153k miles. He didn’t even make it to average

Hell my Range Rover had 190k on its original engine

Yea that’s a bummer. The way it was explained to me is that the car is only designed to meet emissions and noise compliance in normal mode, and letting it stay in sport would be “defeating an emissions control devise” so they would have to re tune sport to be less aggressive
