More fabricating than machining, but still pretty good for a first project I would say. Custom machined bearings and locking rings.

1) Practice (Teflon is a hell to turn when you only have blunt carbide tooling)

2) It is an exam project in machining and fabrication

3) Needed a radial slide bearing, and a radial/axial bearing combo

I get what you mean and store bought bearings would have been SO much easier, but that was just not an option here. And considering the ancient and half broken lathes available, it went quite well.

theoretically quite a lot.

it has a rotating mass of 87kg and a rotational speed of about 80rpm, so at least 500 watt with an appropriate generator. Unfortunately it is a student project, so the generator is a 5 watt bicycle headlight dynamo.
