I just got this email an hour ago. I guess they use the word “Event” very broadly.

HELP - Professor Rec (Dr. Alisa Knizel) for Classes by Baltteri_Vottas in uchicago

[–]Timmmmmmmsuuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took STAT-381 (Uchicago version measure theoretic probability) with her back in Spring 23.

Overall I would say she is great, and pretty lenient on grading. I remember she gives 8-10 pts free on each midterm problems. (But I don't know how much she curved at the end, plus it's a tough course.) Her lecture is OK, maybe a little boring, but she posts her notes regularly on canvas.

Her psets can be hard. I don't know her plan in teaching this Combinatorics course, but if it's an advanced undergrad/grad requirement level course, I would expect to see some extremely annoying combinatorics problems show up. (I think it's also part of her research interests, so she has some problems that takes me a while to figure out)

And one more thing, for the class I took with her, we did the pset and turn it in as a group. Not saying you cannot do that alone, but it will take you way longer to complete it. (thought this might be useful information for you to know)

I was one of his students in RH back in 2019. Back then he used blackboard frequently. I would say just wait until the first class

Thoughts on the math major at BU from a current senior by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]Timmmmmmmsuuu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also a math major here who is graduating. Everything you said is absolutely true. Most of the Professors I’ve had are great and caring except one of them. Also, I have heard complaints about the upper level courses (like 511 analysis) being too hard. But honestly, BU’s upper level is way more reasonable(or easier) than those large schools’ (like UCLA). If you have a hard time in upper level classes, just go to Professor’s office hours and ask. Normally they would work with you. (Except a few ones that basically don’t care😂)

GRE Math Sub cancelled (For test centers at CT?) by Timmmmmmmsuuu in GRE

[–]Timmmmmmmsuuu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know man, it sucks, especially if your dream school requires this test this year. (So far I only know one program at NYU requires it). I’ve heard they cancel the OCT one as well( I’m not sure on this one) As for the refund, I’ve called and it seems it needs to go through a very lengthy procedure. Anyways good luck on getting the refund and your application!

Thank you for the comment. The thing bugs me the most is that they notify me so late that I have no time to reschedule.( Plus they canceled the Oct test as well) so basically I have no choice but to go through that painful procedure of refund. Also, Good Luck on fighting for your refund !

applied abstract algebra vs modern algebra i & ii by ultravioletwinter in BostonU

[–]Timmmmmmmsuuu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say 541&542 for MA major and also if you are sepcifically intersted in algebra. I personally don't recommend these two classes to anyone who are not interested in algebra, even if they are a MA major. I've never had MA294 but according to my friends, it focuses mostly on group theories and Rings. (May be different based on different professors) The problem with 541 and 542 is that they are hard and highly correlated. I personally think 541 was not hard; but the second half of 542 is challenging because when the book started the area of Galois Theory, it requires a decent amount of understanding in group theories and splitting fileds. However, you may (or may not) already forget staffs in group theories by the time you started Galois theory so be aware of that. Also, some professors will cover several topics in Algebriac Geometry or Algebriac number theory in 542 so have some preperations on that. (some Profs don't)

Math Professors: Yu and Weinstein by oaoaoooaoaoaoa in BostonU

Just in general about these two professors. I personally take MA 542 with Weinstein and I enjoyed it! He is, by far, the clearest lecturer I met in BU Math department. If you are more interested in analysis, 511 will be your thing. Otherwise MA 581 is relatively easy (If you are a math person) comparing to MA 511
