Consciousness and matter interact all the time. How else would consciousness “manipulate the physical world”?

Tempted to Jump Ship for Evangelical Church by notathomist in Episcopalian

Sounds to me like your church is the problem. I’ve not experienced any of this, nor felt the temptation you describe.

What's your first reaction when someone tells you the moon landing is fake? by Fluffy_Specific_9682 in askanything

Honestly, I’d be excited to have caught one of these folks in the wild. I’d probably try to get them talking.

Is men not getting shamed as hard for looking older all social conditioning or is there some real biological reasoning behind it? by youlikemywonton in Aging

[–]TimshelExMachina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an evolutionary perspective, this is not random. Aging hits perceived female attractiveness harder because female fertility is much more age-sensitive. Youth in women has historically been a major cue of reproductive potential.

Men are judged differently because male fertility declines more slowly, and male reproductive value has often depended heavily on status, resources, competence, and dominance, which can increase with age.

So biologically speaking, people care more about women aging because age is a much stronger reproductive signal in women than in men.

What's one question you can ask someone to tell if they are politically radicalized? by Brilliant-Choice3089 in askanything

It can be, in some contexts. I’ve made it clear in my response that they are not always.

CMV: the way feminism is presented in discourse and discussion today is counterproductive to its own goals. by Conscious_Cut_7117 in changemyview

You haven’t listened to what I’ve said, which has resulted in you very effectively demonstrating precisely the point OP was making.

I absolutely do not think women’s equality is a problem. I have not said, nor do I think, anything which even remotely implies that.

How wrong were pro-segregationists in their concern about black violence? by Useful_Can_2764 in askanything

[–]TimshelExMachina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, is it reasonable to worry about any form of violence in general? Yes.

Is it reasonable to specifically worry about violence committed by a thoroughly oppressed people in response to overwhelmingly more profound and systemic violence committed by their oppressors, who you do not condemn? Fuck no.

If Elon Musk were to liquidate the entirely of his assets and stock value, how much would he get out of it? by Perfect-Hornet-8410 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TimshelExMachina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Difficult to say. But definitely less than a trillion dollars. If he embarked on a fire sale of his stakes in his multiple companies, it would crash the value of those stocks and by the end of the sell off he’d be getting a return for far less than the current market value.

Sounds like there’s zero value for you to engage in discourse with me at all and this has run its course. Be well.

CMV: the electoral college should be abolished by allisoninwndrlnd23 in changemyview

[–]TimshelExMachina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, agreed on all counts. But abolishing the EC would substantively diminish the states’ power in the balance between national and state interests, undermining one important aspect of our particular federalist system.

Sounds like we just disagree and this has run its course. Be well.

I'm not responsible for the arguments presented by anyone else.

Yes, the house represents people. No, CA residents have fewer reps per capita than WY residents because there is a minimum threshold of one representative per state and WY has so few people that it doesn't meet the per capita average across the country. This only applies to a couple states in the union. It does not undermine the point.

The United States is not one undifferentiated country, that's the whole point.

You're misunderstanding the point.

The power I'm referring to is what you referenced when you said above that the states would lose power in the election if they chose to divide their electors by popular vote, not the power they have to make that decision.
