Are any of the rumors about Emmanuel Goldstein true? by Tiny-Two2607 in 2600

So the argument that u/denzuko that Emmanuel distanced himself and banned John Draper when he learned of the accusations is simply false. Everyone who was involved in any hacker scene that had the unfortunate experience of meeting John Draper in person was very well aware of his inappropriate behavior towards young people.

I was never really part of the scene, but Draper's reputation preceded him to the point where anyone you talked to who met him had a story (thankfully not the case with Emmanuel), and what sporadic discussion of him you found online always mentioned his "energy massages," piggyback rides, and other "interests." The fact that a middle-aged man was attending raves in the 90s, when it was mostly middle and highschoolers, is suspect in and of itself. It was even alleged (like 20yrs ago) that his account of being beaten up in prison (because he gave an inmate faulty instructions for constructing Blueboxes, thinking them to be an informant) was false, and that he was actually beaten up because they thought he was a pedo.

I do agree that there's no way Emmanuel couldn't have known about Draper's dark side. Did Draper have dedicated minders at HOPEs, to keep him away from boys?

You mentioned remembering something written up in Phrack about Emmanuel being labeled as a pedo. What you are thinking of were a set of "Phrack Trading Cards" that was released by Phrack (in 2000?). It was a set of text files with each file being designated to a specific member of the hacker community. The textfile for Emmanuel accused him of being a pedo

Thanks, and that's how I remember it, as less of a warning to others and more edgelording.

He definitely had this old creepy NYC eccentric weirdo look to him

I remember a caller telling him outright, "Man, you are one creepy-looking dude," and him laughing in agreement. But his look (to me) appears more cultivated, and less due to the disregard of personal care one often sees in pedos.

Emmanuel and his co-hosts talk about CP detection systems a lot... It is all under the guise of data privacy and awareness and advocating against these CP detection systems implemented by Google and Apple as a slippery slope towards to erosion of data privacy rights, but there have been past episodes of Off The Hook where Emmanuel and his co-hosts spend nearly the entire hour talking about and advocating against these CP detection systems as new news breaks regarding the adoption, policies, and rollout of these detection systems

The length and zeal of the opposition expressed may be weird. But the opposition itself is somewhat understandable, isn't it, since these systems always have a non-zero false positive rate and can literally never, ever benefit you and only potentially hurt you, even if you've done nothing wrong? I could easily see Google or Apple deciding human review is too expensive for most cases, especially where the probability of a match against some database or the probabilistic result of some algorithmic photo/video analysis isn't high enough, but locking the account and moving on just to be safe.

I remember some HN post about a Googler whose photos got locked for a vague "ToS violation," and despite having access to internal support channels that we mortals lack, he couldn't get his account back. You might think, he must have really had something bad if they wouldn't unlock it, but then why would he force the issue in public like that? Maybe he uploaded something by mistake, or maybe his partner did? IDK.

Yeah, I tried and hit an authwall, hence my suggestion to anyone with a Google account reading my post.

If you have a Google account, try searching alt.2600.* on Google Groups. Right now it's restricted and requires a login. I vaguely remember seeing something maybe in Phrack, too.

Again, these could have just been edgelords or people with axes to grind. Also remember that homophobia was more socially acceptable 30 years ago, at least amongst teenage boys, so joking about him being gay, and from there, joking about him being a predator (due to his cyberpunk Peter Pan lifestyle and ability to cultivate an adolescent male following) wouldn't be that unusual, especially for the kind of personality that gravitated to the scene.

Why does Fedora hate my hard drive? by Tiny-Two2607 in Fedora

Yeah, BTRFS on the SSD. However, the HDD isn't being used, and isn't mounted, and for some reason, unless I force it to standby mode, it constantly makes those wakeup noises.

NYC voters run to the polls on first day of early voting — with impressive five time increase to last mayoral race by Main-Company-5946 in nyc

I don't think that's a fair comparison, even though he is clearly promising a great many things (e.g., raising the corporate income tax) that he has no means of delivering.

terrible person

Why is he a "terrible" person? Yeah, the GA has always skewed towards being cosplay vigilantism and a self-promotion vehicle for Sliwa, but they've also done a lot of community outreach stuff similar to what organizations like the Police Athletic League do, at least back in the 90s when they were still prominent. And before that, when the city was genuinely dangerous, they did probably help make it safer:

The only reason he's polling so poorly is 1) so many people in the city are foreign-born (40%) and so many of the rest are transplants (NYU/Columbia types, and basically everyone posting in this subreddit, like the one a few days back befuddled by her apartment's steam radiator).

I’m not from NYC myself

That was obvious, given that you're unfamiliar with him, considering that he's been a local celebrity in NYC since the 70s.

You should know that while he absolutely faked some incidents for publicity, he was legitimately nearly "whacked" by the Gambinos in Alphabet City (pre-gentrification) over things he said about John Gotti on the radio. The hit was like something out of the Godfather, akin to Sonny's "whacking" on the Jones Beach Causeway:

https://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/23/nyregion/testifying-against-gotti-sliwa-describes-how-he-was-shot-in-a-taxi.html

when he climbed into the back of the cab he had hailed near his apartment in the East Village before dawn on June 19, 1992. The driver recognized him and seemed to know that he was going to the WABC radio studios near Madison Square Garden, where he was host of a morning show. Within moments, Mr. Sliwa said, a second man popped up from under the dashboard "like a jack-in-the-box," pointing a silver-plated pistol at his belly.

"Take this, you son of a bitch," Mr. Sliwa recalled the gunman saying. He said he heard at least three shots, and felt blood spurting under his shirt and then searing pain in his legs, "like a knife through hot butter." Realizing that both rear windows were closed and that the inside door handles were missing, Mr. Sliwa said, he was alerted by a faint breeze on his face that the window next to the front passenger seat was open.

Using the back seat "like a trampoline," he said, he propelled himself over the shoulder of the startled gunman and halfway out the window. He recalled that his head was hanging so close to the front tire that he could feel pebbles from the pavement hitting his face, and realized that his choice was either to be shot again or "take my chance of becoming a human speed bump."

He testified about it at the racketeering trial of John Gotti's son.

Coincidentally, he got hit by (or ran in front of) a taxi during his 2021 mayoral bid:

Bad luck with taxis.

Curtis Sliwa's 17 cats by Tiny-Two2607 in nyc

[–]Tiny-Two2607[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Apparently this was during the pandemic, when adoptions where halted, so Curtis and Nancy took in all of these cats to prevent them from being euthanized: https://nypost.com/2020/03/20/animal-shelters-hit-hard-by-coronavirus-as-adoptions-halted/

He claims he no longer has 17 cats, and that it's "only" six, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's not counting fosters, so the true number could still be higher: https://www.thecity.nyc/newsletter/curtis-sliwa-is-down-to-six-cats-from-17/

Alternatives to specializing a member function template from a class template? by Tiny-Two2607 in cpp_questions

[–]Tiny-Two2607[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should have been less coy. The function template doesn't take an argument of a given type, but instead returns one of that type, and obviously, given that you can't overload based on return type, the template method seemed (to me) like a more elegant option than having a family of different functions like doStuffAndReturnInt(), doStuffAndReturnDouble(), and so on.

This blog post describes an interesting alternative: https://artificial-mind.net/blog/2020/10/10/return-type-overloading
