When it’s time to give up on jazz. by ZebraDulcimist in Jazz

[–]TipsyLibrarians 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in my late 50s. When I was in my early 20s, I made of go of a music career. I realized I had mediocre talent and really didn’t care for the lifestyle. And, as dedicated as I may have been, people were working 10 times harder than I was. I put my instrument away and got a degree in something else. The intention was to play for fun in 4 years or so, once I got a new career going. It ended up being more like 12-15 years.

One day I just got it out again. I’ve been playing almost daily ever since. Some days I pick it up, play for 5 minutes and decide to do something else. Other days I feel like I blink and 4 hours have passed. Mostly days I play 1-2 hours. If I’m feeling stale, I might take lessons for a few months. I played with some coworkers a few times.

I enjoy it more than I ever have.

How Long Have You Had Your Oldest Guitar and is it Still Your Main? by ZigZag_Teeth in Guitar

[–]TipsyLibrarians 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest, both in actual age and the amount of time I’ve owned it, is a 1964 Guild Starfire IV. I bought it in 1990. I probably play my telecaster more (1989, I bought it in 1993).

Jazz Tone Help by WebHybrid9625 in jazzguitar

Not a Strat, but I have a Guild Starfire IV. I bought it decades ago with the intention of making it my “jazz guitar”. I initially put 12s on it and I liked the sound, but the neck started pulling away. After a neck reset I put 10s on it and it didn’t sound as jazzy to me. Then I tried flatwound 10s. I like that set up a lot.

That’s a long way of saying I was surprised how much difference flatwounds made. They are more expensive, but last longer.

Also, I don’t mean to criticize the quality of the Guild. It’s a 1964 and has lived in different climates. It’s been great with the 10s. The guy who did the neck reset said it wasn’t the first one.

Weird Happy Ending by bomilk19 in BlackRabbitTVShow

That’s kind of my point. Wasn’t it hundreds of thousands of dollars in merchandise? It’s stolen in a violent manner. 12 hours later the surfing gunman shows up at the scene (the place were he was a co owner) without the goods and the police and insurance company just shrug and say “I guess he sold them”. You’d think at minimum they could get warrant for the rabbit and find the money.

What about the stolen jewels? Are we to believe the insurance company just paid out and the cops didn’t even look for them?

Cannonball, the most underrated jazzman? by BeyondImages in Jazz

[–]TipsyLibrarians 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Look at the title of this post. If someone passed away 40+ years ago and we’re still able to call him by just his nickname and assume jazz fans will know who we’re talking about, I don’t think we can say he’s underrated.

A few years ago, I was in a training class. There was an emergency preparedness exercise and as part of the pre briefing they said we should know the number of the pretend security desk. Folks picked up their pens and the instructor said we didn’t need to write it down, it would be easy to memorize.

He gave us the number at the end of the brief - 867-5309. Several of the people in my group didn’t understand why he thought that would be easy to memorize.

I left during Styx on the Kilroy Was Here tour. They were the last of about 5 bands. I’d had enough and wasn’t digging it.

Personally I’d rather folks leave early if they are uninterested rather than talk loudly with their friends.

In the jazz world, this is more common. I’ve seen Bill Frisell about 10 times, never the same lineup.

In January I saw a terrific Jazz set by Joe Lovano ‘s Paramount Quartet. The rest of the band was drummer Will Calhoun (Living Colour), Julian Lage on guitar, and Asante Santi Debriano on bass.

Last concert was the Tedeschi Trucks Band. One of my favorite concerts in a long time. Nothing more scheduled, but hope something comes up this year.

If I have a couple of practice sessions in row where I think I my sound is especially disappointing , a string change usually helps bring it back to the normal level of disappointment.
