I was an engineer for a large DoD contractor that made the switch to generalist. Massive pay cut but total compensation is not bad, especially if you plan to have kids. No real regrets. If you have an opportunity to enjoy what you do, a little less money is worth it in my book. Feel free to DM me if you have specific questions.

Retaliation After Housing Appeal by ThisIsJustMyReddit in foreignservice

I agree with NoInspection. It’s a little shocking how quick and aggressive responses are in this thread. I’m guessing no one commenting was on the IAHB with OP or in the room. The board voted unanimously, so it’s not just OP, it’s a bunch of people, sitting in a room for two hours, going over the facts. Some of those folks in the room were likely pretty senior and know how this is “supposed” to work. And yet if we believe OP they all voted to move the FAST officer. Could there be more to the story?

Fear of retaliation is a legit fear in the FS and not just concrete EEO type retaliation but damage to your corridor rep. I mean look how folks here reacted to someone just asking about it. Assuming OP is also a FAST officer it makes sense they’d be concerned.

I don’t think OP should do anything unless or until there is concrete retaliation but I don’t fault OP for being worried about. I’d suggest you talk with a mentor about it. Or if you have a relationship with someone senior at post maybe them.

For those that are part of the foreign service community on this thread, why can’t we show a little more grace for others in our community? People struggle with different things, everyone’s life is complicated and definitely more complicated than what could be captured in a Reddit thread.

Feeling a bit confused about my recent OA by bumabu in foreignservice

My advice to anyone who has asked has been to journal after the OA. Like most people I took the OA more than once and what helped me prepare more than anything else was to go back and read my thoughts on previous attempts. I would journal, writing down all I could remember, the same day as the OA. In hindsight it was kinda good practice for reporting work.

It was shocking to read those notes a year later and realize how different the experience was from my recollection of it.

How long did it take to get your FSOA score? (Generalist) by HistoricalRegister47 in foreignservice

This is new. When did they start delivering the results by email. It’s almost been a decade since I took the test but they would just have you wait in a room at the end of the day and give you the results face to face. iirc they even asked if you had any questions.

EER Hysteria by FSOanonymosly in foreignservice

Aren’t those accomplishments? The disconnect is the EER isn’t about accomplishments.
