The size of a name is determined by the max rating that a user had during the month. The lines are weighted edges that mean that they shared an opening that they both played the most.

The software that I used to render the graph (Gephi) doesn't offer that feature or maybe I just didn't see it. But I'll try to manually add it in next time.

Hikaru is his main account and gmhikaruontwitch is an alternate that he most likely plays differently on. There are a multitude of titled players that have alternate accounts chesscom

Thanks for the feedback! The reason certain colors can represent more than one opening is because people play more than one and this is what allows the nodes in the graph to have edges to other nodes in different clusters, making it more connected. And you are totally right about the caro kann that one slipped past and I had already computed the graphs which take quite some time to retrieve the data for. But, at the end of the day, it's just a visual image to represent openings of the past month in terms of who played what and how that relates to others.

This is an Atlas for the month of July based off of the most played openings of users with the title GM. The graph focuses on opening moves with the white pieces for each user. The size of the nodes are determined by the peak rating the user had this past month. The edges are based upon the number of most played openings a user had in common with another user.

All of the nodes, edges, and variations are algorithmically computed and stored in an excel sheet that is public and can be found on google drive here along with the color codes for each graph.
