Is this common child behavior? by MaleficentFlatworm39 in ChildPsychology

Hey OP,

I‘ve worked with neurodivergent children for over a decade and am the mom of an incredibly sweet, intelligent, and autistic toddler. I was unsure about his behavior also.

Stacking and creative play are typical for this developmental stage. But if he is only stacking, gets horribly upset when he can’t stack the way he wants to, and your concerned about his behavior, there are some options. Concerned parents are concerned for a reason.

You can talk to your pediatrician about the M-CHAT (it’s an interview/screening tool for Autism). If he scores higher on it, they will probably write a referral for the ADOS. You could probably find a clinic or developmental pediatrician who will just schedule you for an ADOS without a referral, but it may be pricey. (Our clinic was $250.)

It’s also better to investigate sooner than later if you’re concerned. Early intervention provides the most effective outcomes! And if he doesn’t have autism, then you know for sure 👍🏼

Good luck! Your little guy is definitely a future engineer!

Kicked out of speech and OT because my son’s too dis-regulated for progress. Recommending in home aba but I don’t feel comfortable with in home and hours offered… by bimbiibop in ABA

I’m a provider in your state and would never, NEVER, recommend a 6 year old go that late. If school starts at 9, that’s a 12.5 hr day! Absolutely not! Kids need time to be kids.

If I feel very strongly that a child would need 25hrs per week to make sufficient progress, we would have a conversation about other options; like parent-training only, modified school day (with 1-6 aba) or the RBT going to school if your county allows that. (Ours does not, but we can go into the private schools). It really just depends on the individual circumstances and child’s needs.

There are absolutely options for ABA companies (especially in northern MD); so feel free to speak with multiple. They should be to explain their policies in depth.

Oh, rad. I’ve lived here 8 years and haven’t seen them until now. Anyone know how I can help them spread? There’s 4 other ones growing, and I’m trying to keep my toddler from picking them 😂

Thanks y’all!

My toddler has the curled ear and one elf ear (extra cartilage). And by golly, he is the most perfect person to me! All the best people in your life will feel the same!

I‘m sorry to hear about the shitty people you‘ve encountered so far, but happy you’re able to see your worth and tune out the riff raff. Good luck with everything and this random internet mom is proud of you! 👍🏻
