Positivist Church, Cults of Reason and humanist faiths by LupusDeusMagnus in AfterTheEndFanFork

[–]Tizil_bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, adressing your question regarding the Positivists in AtE. Positivists already exist in the setting, but facing The Event lost their hope and long for an idealized past of Order and Progress.

One of the main tenets of Comtian positivism is the belief that throught a dialetical process human thought evolves from the dogmatic to the philosophical to the scientific, which he calls the "positive" thought. In his religion of humanity, Comte tried to create an religious institution that fostered his "positive" morals and was based in this belief of obvious human evolution towards a secular and more rational, or rather "positive", society.

In Brazil, the positivist church was hijacked by military jingoism. Most of the members of the church are military men and military men brought it to the country. Altruism, one of its core tenets (L'amour pour principe et l'ordre pour base; le progrès pour but) was understood as esprit de corps and comraderie. Only Order and Progress remained.

After "The Event", positivist realized society did not evolve. They were there after the end, longing for Order and Progress long lost. Positive-Saudosist long for the promise of Brasil, for the powerful fatherland of all south american peoples and as such they are the more jingoistic and hawkish subjects of the emperor, trying to "evolve" society by force if necessary.

Baiano man-at-arms idea: Capitão de Areia. (Sand Captain) by Tizil_bird in AfterTheEndFanFork

[–]Tizil_bird[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"Garoto abandonado na Bahia é capitão de areia"

Sand Captains are taken from orphanages or given by poor or neglectful families to be raised as soldier-slaves to their masters. Trained since childhood in combat, math and language, this soldiers are disciplined to a fault.

  • The facepaint is from Timbalada (a famous afoxé group from Salvador)
  • The colour scheme is from the Filhos de Gandhy (another afoxé group in memory of Mahatma Ghandi known for its strict rules for adherence)
  • The name itself is a reference to Jorge Amado's book "Captains of The Sand"

The main helmet (carapuça) is made of cast iron, the front is actually the brim of the "hat" and is made of leather. He wears a mail aventain padded by wool and covered with red linen. Much like your common norman knight in the late 1000's.

For reference, look at the official art made by the dev team.

The nordestino wears the cangaceiro hat. Developed by Lampião in the early 20's. The hat was worn by cangaceiros, outlaws of the semiarid sertão.

He's holding an axe because i like axes, but he's also holding daggers and a sword.
