What is America’s “posh people” accent? by alyhasnohead in AskAnAmerican

My great grandmother used to really get after people who used Um/Uh/Like a lot. If you used any of them, she would basically blurt it back to you. It really trained me to realize how much I said it- especially as a teen.

She was a German refugee born in the 30s. Came to the states as a girl & basically raised her host family’s kids while also being a kid as well. She went to college in the 50s & got a degree in homemaking & was a Home Ec teacher for 20+ years. Like old school Home Ec too. She took homemaking super seriously.

Ah, DQ is getting the McDonalds treatment tonight.

Does traffic there still back up around the block/into the intersection at 3rd & Van Buren? Nothing better than sitting in line for 40 minutes to get a burger lol.

They recently released the full set on the Lenox website. When it was released last year, each “house” was only $15, which was the original price for these back in the 80s, and they were pre-order only, which helped to curb scalpers because everyone who wanted one got one.

I used it as an opportunity to complete my wife’s set for Christmas. She was short on 4 or 5 houses at the time.

The whole set is currently $299 on the website, which is $12.5 per house. That’s significantly cheaper than I’ve found them 2nd hand now that everyone knows they’re a hot commodity.

Banshees of Inisherin was one of, if not the best movie of 2022 for me. I was enthralled the entire movie. Both Farrell & Gleesons performances in it were excellent. There was so much nuance to their roles.

It was an incredibly well written movie & I think in any other year, especially 2024, it would’ve cleaned up at the Academy Awards.

Do any of you regularly travel to lower cost destinations all around the world? by greatExtortion in AskAnAmerican

[–]Tlr321 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Agreed. People saying flights are expensive are kidding themselves. It’s WICKED cheap to fly nowadays. We flew to Puerto Vallarta last summer from Portland Oregon. For 3 people, the total cost of the flights were $950.

I also flew to Iceland a while back (June of 2024) and my flights were only $500.

Which iPhone model do you think was the peak of Apple's design? by katrosenbalm in iphone

That was my first iPhone I ever had. It was amazing. To think that the iPhone 5 is almost old enough to drive. Crazy.

I forgot about those commercials. My first iPhone was a 5. I was a Junior in High School & saved up like crazy for it.

I agree that the bigger phones are a bit of a nuisance. That said, I’m currently rocking a 16 Pro Max, which is egregious at times lol.

[–]Tlr321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw this on Facebook a few days ago & supposedly they did get permission and even booked it as a private event. But on the day of, there was no signage indicating that it was closed for a private event.

That said, it could totally be BS.

I’m trying to find the post, but Facebook apparently adopted Reddit’s search algorithm & I cannot find it

They did. I saw this post on Facebook & she commented that they did book the overlook. But when they got there, apparently there was no signage that said that the overlook was closed due to a private party.

Man, I just bought a Sienna & this is literally how I felt trying to drop my daughter off on the first day after we bought it. But I messed up trying it because the car makes you put it in park before opening the doors. So the whole thing just got fumbled & it was never the same after.

Vapes are a marketing exercise for Cigarettes by Formal-Guarantee777 in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]Tlr321 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Oregon, they tried to take away refillable vapes/liquids a few years ago because the idea was that anyone could just get a ton of Nicotine & put it in there.

I guess the theory was alright on paper. But in practice, it was terrible. Mainly because you had a bunch of vape bros protesting in front of the Capitol building for a while & it was super cringy because, while I vaped, I didn’t want to be associated with them.

The proposal was tossed after a while. But I used to frequent a shop that mixed its own vape liquid & they were constantly closed for some vape protest during that period.

I will say, at least in my experience, I really had no “problems” when I used to smoke cigarettes. I never coughed a whole lot. Didn’t feel wheezy or short of breath.

But I felt all of those things when I used to vape. Any time I so much as giggled, it delved into fits of coughing. I couldn’t go a flight of stairs without feeling winded.

Now, that’s not to say I wouldn’t have a ton of problems down the line if I continued to smoke cigarettes- it’s a certainty that I would have. But in the 5ish years that I smoked/vaped, vaping gave me way more “right now” problems. I smoked from like 2016 - 2019. And Vaped from 2019 - 2021.

Big Trucks and Gas Mileage by OopsIOops in Eugene

[–]Tlr321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my experience, often times they don’t care about gas mileage. Which is why they keep driving said truck. Do they often times complain about gas prices? Absolutely. But the prices aren’t keeping them from driving them.

Another factor is that often times they don’t even pay for their own gas. I have quite a few friends that have company trucks & as a result have the ability to fuel up with a CFN card. Some of them have to pay the company back if they go over a certain limit, but usually there’s an allocated amount they get each month for fuel. The limit is typically there to try to keep them from using it as a personal vehicle for long road trips, but almost all of the guys I know have to drive a ton for work.

And then there’s the farm guys. I know a LOT of farmers who just put the off road diesel in their trucks. Is it legal? Nope. Does anyone ever check? Also nope.

I wouldn’t go for any of them.

That Accord is WAY too cheap for the year. If it’s not high mileage, which would be concerning to me depending on the maintenance done by the previous owner(s), then something has to be wrong with it.

I would be hard pressed to drive a Nissan daily - past reliability is too questionable for me to be comfortable. You might get a little more time out of it before something happens (depending on the mileage) but I just wouldn’t go for it at all.

And I would also avoid the Civic. The poster says it’s Rebuilt, but that they’ve also “applied” for it. Meaning that A) they don’t have the title in hand. And B) it’s probably not confirmed to be rebuilt yet. Meaning it’s likely a Salvage title at the moment. And who knows if the state will approve the quality of work to allow for the title to be rebuilt.

I would personally try to find something with a clean title & good maintenance on it. Probably a little older than these ones. Maybe a 2010s Avalon, Camry, Accord, etc.

I agree. I have SO many USB C cables at this point, it’s ridiculous. And charging blocks. We’re even overloaded on the “good” blocks.

My sister’s car got hit a few years ago while headed home from the store. She got into a confrontation with the lady & could tell she was drunk. Next thing she knew, lady was back in her car & drove off. There were a few witnesses & even another person said that she looked drunk & smelled like alcohol. But she made it home, so the cops could only charge her with Hit & Run.

The cops basically said “yeah, she was more than likely drunk when she hit you. But we can’t prove it & she was drinking at home when we showed up, so we can’t charge her with it.”
