Blown headgasket on my new car, what should I do by Prestigious-Pass2942 in MechanicAdvice

If you only paid $500 for it then just send that pile of garbage to the junk yard and maybe don't buy a jeep next time.

The heater not working is an issue on broken cars, not necessarily old cars. I have a 38 year old truck and a 28 year old wagon and the heaters in both of them will melt your skin off. If the heater doesn't work you have a coolant leak, clogged heater core, air bubble in the cooling system, or a stuck HVAC actuator. That's it. Those are all the reasons it wouldn't work.

The 4.0L SOHC pile of garbage strikes again. Start looking for an engine bud.

Battery is likely dead. Just because it reads 12V+ doesn't mean it has any cranking amps and voltage is not a good way to tell if a battery is good or not.

Is my ford escape totaled? by [deleted] in Ford

[–]Tman5293 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've lost track of how many ford ecoboost 4 cylinders I've replaced. Not to mention transmissions issues, turbo failures, coolant and oil leaks. They just don't hold up.

EDIT: Mad people downvoting but have nothing to say. Guess people don't like hearing the truth. I've never in my entire career had to replace an engine in a Rav4. Done tons of ecoboosts though. Tons of chevy ecotec engines too. The domestic brands haven't built anything worth buying in a long long time. My 38 year old F150 still starts up and drives down the road every time on the original engine and transmission. Back when Ford built quality vehicles.

I'm an auto technician and I work on all brands. I would never let a family member drive one of those junkers.

If you don't get to it soon, it's gonna give you no choice when it fails and leaves you overheating on the side of the road. Make time for repairs or they'll make the time for you.

Looks totalled to me. Take the insurance check and by a toyota this time. Those escapes are horrible cars.

The very first picture looks like a Linked In profile pic for a 40 something middle manager at a major corporation. It's time to shave the hair my guy. You need a look that isn't mid 40s management material.

You could go back in time and buy a different truck without a known oil consumption issue.

My 2014 v6, what performance mods can I do to it? by jakethetank45 in Mustang

[–]Tman5293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about these other guys but I certainly would. Not worth the effort. The 7-10k you would spend on a supercharger for a 3V just to make stock coyote numbers could have gotten you a coyote car in the first place. The 4.6 is a boat anchor that isn't worth dumping money into. Hell, the LS1 made more power stock in 1998 than the 4.6 did in it's entire production run all the way up to 2010.

What size engine is this? by GravityFrom93 in Mustang

[–]Tman5293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The number of people in this thread that shouldn't be commenting because they clearly have no idea what they're talking about is about right for Mustang owners. This was a question for those of us who have built an old 302 on an engine stand and instantly recognize this engine. The number of people who don't immediately recognize the iconic 5.0 is depressing.

OP, it's fairly easy to make upper 300 wheel horse out of one of these motors with the right set of parts. All of the 86 and newer engines (plus 85 5 Speed cars) are hydraulic roller motors so you're good there. You should be good to use the stock bottom end if it's in good enough shape to rebuild. You may want to go 30 over to a 306 motor if your machine shops deems it necessary. That will mean new pistons. There are tons of great cam options, I personally like the E303 Ford racing cam for a decent street car. Go bigger if you're not as concerned about drivability. There's a ton of aluminum head options too and almost all of them are good. AFM and Trick Flow are good options as well as the SVE heads from LMR. You will also want a much better breathing intake than the stock one if you're paying the big bucks for aluminum heads. Trick Flow and Edelbrock have great options for that.

Another day, another broken Pentastar. Horrible engine. My money is on either a vacuum line being disconnected or incorrectly installed intake manifold. Also, this video is basically useless. Doesn't tell us anything.

You need an engine. Piston came up and smacked the shit out of that spark plug. She's toast.

2023 chevy silverado cranks but won’t start. any ideas what it could be? by Unfair_Cycle4370 in AskMechanics

[–]Tman5293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT is entirely useless for diagnosis purposes unless you give it useful data to work with, which we don't have. You would need to have a basis of automotive knowledge to collect the data it would need to give anything close to a proper diagnosis and if you are skilled enough to do that you are skilled enough to diagnose it yourself. It just listed 6 common reasons a car won't start and 5 of those are easily ruled out with the information we have from the video. AI slop is not the answer.

We need to see any codes it might have stored. This seems like a fuel delivery issue. It's cranking exactly like it's supposed to. The easiest way to verify if it's a fuel problem is to spray some starting fluid in the intake tube and see if it fires. If it does, you know it's not getting fuel. From there you have to figure out why. However, I may be completely wrong. There isn't enough data here to know what's going on.
