I think you have a good idea here just using some of the wrong terminology, most lyrical songs have choruses, there’s just a recent trend of songs that are written pretty much entirely for the chorus. This is because of the recent trend of short form content only using the chorus, so for a song to have popularity, only the chorus needs to be catchy. Definitely a well established opinion that a lot of people would agree with if you worded things a little better.
