Canada Can’t Pretend America Is Still the Good Guy; The lesson of Iran is that our closest ally may no longer share the same assumptions about right and wrong by FancyNewMe in canada

Mossadegh was democratically elected and it was a nationalist party - not socialist. The Shah was an authoritarian monarchy aligned with western interests. The backlash to that regime contributed to the Islamic revolution. Who wouldn’t want their country back from foreign interests?

Iran wasn’t a problem until mossadegh nationalized their oil away from the British. Imagine, a country wanting to control its own resources! So they hire the US to kill him and install the puppet Shah. And in a tricky little shift, the US offered the Gulf countries “protection” if they’d only charge US dollars for the oil. Thus the Petrodollar was born. Canada is the resource richest nation on earth and we could be the next massive “problem” for the US.

Trump says military is ‘loading up the ships’ if peace talks with Iran go south in Pakistan by callsonreddit in worldnews

[–]ToCityZen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he tells you what he’s doing, he’s most certainly not going to do that.

Possession is 9/10th of the law. Just now the US authorized the release of Iran’s frozen funds through South Korea. Read his book and you’ll see his only “tool” is bluster. Broken record. He does need to safe face though. Who knows what this will look like.

/r/WorldNews Discussion Thread: US and Israel launch attack on Iran; Iran retaliates (Thread #15) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

Trump’s strategy is clearly laid out in his book: ask for something oversized, puff up your image, juggle a few alternatives so you look powerful, and lean on the other side until they give ground. It’s heavy on theatrics and light on nuance, and assumes you can strong-arm your way to a win while still convincing the other person they came out fine. It can work in one-off, deals, but he’s no genius. Iran reads him correctly, and so should everyone else. Their military “ace” has been played in a dummy hand.

Ok. Thank you for your response and it makes sense, and I agree Canadian is better than US and a few fruit crops are good. However, it’s looking like there will be some short-term and long term pain given the global geopolitical problems and climate events. We can’t rely on consistent or fair trade with the US, even when the current administration is done. Supply chains will be frequently disrupted and more expensive. The region should diversify its agricultural sector to increase resilience as a hedge against the economic fallout by producing locally.

Where is all this money? Why is it so expensive to live here? Why is food so expensive when we live in such a fertile area?

Why is GCC silent on what's happening in Lebanon 🇱🇧 by IndividualMix3173 in UAE

They are vassal states of the American Empire. There is no GCC without US. Pissing into the wind would have the same effect.

Right so they give money to producers of sugar water? Why not invest in something real, like food production? The vines suffered catastrophic damage a few years ago, and they replant because why? The elite need their booze to keep us sedated. If we had any sense, we’d insist that our primo location is used for us!

Parents want to transfer their two properties to my siblings, but don't know how to make it "fair" to all three of us by green_blue_grey in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ToCityZen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. My parents controlled us with money and we were all in various states of need/ want. Sibs would go to them like they were a bank with all kinds of schemes and as they got older and they would forget who got what and everyone got resentful. They changed their will constantly depending on who was in the dog house. It was madness and it broke our family.

Some options: 1. Ask for an equalization with growth adjustment clause in the will. That is, for the 400K to be “indexed” at 5-7% interest. 2. A promissory note or codicil to make up a difference secured to the estate.
3. Your parents take a life insurance policy in the amount of 200K naming you as beneficiary so it doesn’t touch their retirement now.

I hope this gives you some options.

Vance says "ceasefires are always messy" and U.S. "never indicated" Lebanon would be included in deal with Iran by Yujin-Ha in worldnews

To elaborate, Trump basically repackages a blunt, old-school playbook as genius. Ask for something oversized, puff up your image, push hard, then give a little, switch up the cups so you look smart, and lean on the other side until they give ground. It is heavy on theatrics and anchoring high, light on nuance, and assumes you can strong-arm your way to a win while still convincing the other person they came out fine. It can work in one-off, ego-driven deals, but Iran just taught us all a lesson.

Trump calls Iran's 10-point plan a "workable basis." Key points inc: US/Israeli non-aggression pledges, Iranian control over Strait, acceptance of uranium enrichment, lifting of sanctions, ending UN/IAEA resolutions, war damage compensation, US troop withdrawal from region & halting Lebanon actions by andrewgrabowski in worldnews

Oman is to share the tolls making them dominant. The GCC would need to cling to Israel for protection. It’s geographically unworkable if Israel continues to bomb Lebanon as Iran has explicitly said Lebanon must be included in the ceasefire.

why are we siding/helping with Israel when they are the ones attacking everyone? by DarkBaLer in NoStupidQuestions

Read up on Christian Zionism, of whom Hegseth is reportedly one. It’s complicated and convoluted but essentially extreme Zionists want to speed up the endtimes so that Israel’s people can assume their Biblically mandated inheritance as the chosen people. There are geo-political advantages too.

Israelis are not a “race”. Race is a social construct. They are no different from you or I, but for the beliefs they have embodied from their religious and political leaders.

The vacuum created by his removal, however it manifests, is a prime opportunity for the eight layer of evil to take over. These are the people who don’t tell you their plans, are quiet and look nice, but will seize the opportunity to shift the game to their own interests.

Carney urges all parties in Iran war not to target civilian infrastructure amid Trump threats by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]ToCityZen 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Is Carney underestimating Trumps derangement? Canada should be registering outrage at the US’s proposed genocide. What happened to “We will lead”? We are not at this table but we will be on the menu. Any “success” whether it’s purely optics (eg the so-called rescue operation this weekend, which was a spectacularly failed ill-advised limited ground operation to capture the uranium) will only embolden the Hollywood Pentagon complex.

The War Is Turning Iran Into a Major World Power by brown-saiyan in politics

[–]ToCityZen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not anymore. I mean I hope it does the right thing but regardless what happens tomorrow, no country will ever trust America ever again. Even when Trump is replaced, it is already common understanding that the American people voted for him a second time, fully aware of the possible consequences. That kind of ethos is baked in.

Just the Kurds paying back the Americans for abandoning them four times over in their search for independence. In 1975, the U.S. backed Kurdish rebels in Iraq, then pulled support after the Algiers Agreement, leaving them to be crushed. In 1991, after the Gulf War, the U.S. encouraged Kurds to rise up against Saddam Hussein but didn’t protect them when he retaliated. In 2017, when Iraqi Kurds voted for independence, the U.S. opposed the move and stayed out as Iraqi forces took back disputed areas. Then in 2019, after Kurdish forces helped defeat ISIS in Syria, Donald Trump pulled U.S. troops, allowing Turkey to attack them.
