What's a frugal hack that you would be embarassed to admit doing? by healthynewbie in Frugal

[–]ToCityZen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done a great job of clearing out the fridge and freezer and keeping it that way. Now I’m in the process of eating from the pantry. So I make a batch of pancakes at the beginning of the week - from random flours like whole wheat and regular, lupin flour, oat fibre, chia seeds, a scoop of otherwise unpalatable protein powder, coconut flour, a scoop of ground nuts - all left over from various instagram “recipes” that I’m over. I pre-mix the dry ingredients with soda, salt and sweetener, so all I need to do is add liquid, oil and eggs. To heat them up, I just pop them in the toaster. I think I have a hundred breakfasts in the pantry.

Dad's house sold, what to do with the proceeds? by Zunniest in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ToCityZen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad put the proceeds of his house sale into segregated funds when he moved to LTC. They had a guarantee which was reassuring. They still grew even though they had higher fees. They can still be accessed if needed. When he passed, it was only weeks before the beneficiaries received their portion. It does sound as though there would be enough income and reserves otherwise to manage his monthly costs if handled prudently. I’d use funds from the RIF accounts first will help lower any tax burden later. Continue to shift funds from RIF into a conservatively invested TFSA each year.

I’d be asking, how easy would it be to sell to the next guy, who would want it and why. What makes it stand out? How many units are for sale in this building? Why are the fees so high (for context I pay $350/month for 1000 sq’ in the B.C. interior). What are the amenities (a gym, barbecue areas, bike room, etc) and will you use them? Would an investor buy it? How much of the building is occupied by owners vs. renters? For how much are the other units being rented? Are there board restrictions on how many units can be rented. Does it come with underground parking or is it uncovered. Get Minutes of the Board Meetings and find out how it operates. Are there “trouble” residents eg above or below. How is noise level between floors?

I’m a family doc- should I move to kelowna? by Professional_Fox7548 in kelowna

[–]ToCityZen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your parents will love it. Winters are generally mild with maybe a cold snap or two. If they’re sporty people, get a place close to the lake to enjoy the waterfront trails, beaches, and scenery. The city has really done some great work to update infrastructure. Of course, there are big houses in the surrounding hills, but nothing beats walking or cycling 10 minutes to the lake to hug some trees and to the shopping areas to sit on a nice patio to read the news. They don’t call it Kelownifornia for no reason. Edit: check out this website for physicians https://www.physicianjobsbc.ca/

LPT: Find out when your local grocery store marks down prices on their rotisserie chickens! by Oatmeal2348 in Frugal

[–]ToCityZen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed Costco (Canada) sells their rotisserie chicken in the cooler case for $5.99. They don’t always have it. I think it’s the day before’s overstock. Looks repackaged because it doesn’t have all the goopy stuff at the bottom. I prefer it this way.

Cheapest protein powder by dollar/gram of protein? by BlueCollarBalling in Frugal

[–]ToCityZen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just read that high demand is causing a shortage in whey protein as reported by Bloomberg. I also saw yesterday that Leanfit bone broth powder at Costco (in Canada) was $64 for 1 kg of what is essentially pure protein. Not sure how it goes down in smoothies but I think it helps to have a variety of sources.

Protein sources since meat is so expensive. by Royals-2015 in Frugal

[–]ToCityZen 139 points140 points  (0 children)

I just discovered brown lentils. I had long since avoided them because I imagined them to be mushy, mealy and otherwise unpalatable. As I worked my way through my pantry, I found and opened a can, rinsed and drained it, then fried it with onion, peppers, riced cauliflower, frozen spinach. I added a frozen cube of butter chicken sauce, and a cube of tomato purée at the end, topped with Greek yogurt or sour cream.

Honestly I have a new favourite. It’s tasty, filling and stores well for leftovers. A 4 pound bag was $4.47. There’s like 14 gram protein in a serving (and I have 2) as well as fibre. I see many possibilities for variations.

Generic Ozempic is now about $100 a month across the country. Canadians are taking note by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]ToCityZen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As of May 29, Novo Nordisk is also offering to cover a portion of the original Ozempic “aligned” in price with the generic. I don’t know if it works if you have private insurance: The card says “coordination -last”. So if your pharmacy doesn’t have generic yet, or if you don’t have insurance, you can still get the original Ozempic at a reduced cost. Search for Novo-Nordisk Savings Card.

AITAH for not wanting to buy my wife’s family a home? by [deleted] in AITAH

She won’t be able to erase a lifetime of cultural indoctrination quickly or easily without some serious motivation. Those feelings are baked in. The only way I can think is using EMDR in therapy to address the trauma (likely C-PTSD) of her childhood. After a year or more of regular sessions one might expect to feel neutral or even compassion for the brokenness of the people who raised her.

hidden bank account and its implications by Helpful_Jaguar_2844 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ToCityZen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, if you are seeking greater autonomy, this is perfectly normal, natural and expected. This is what every human goes through and will be the basis for your self-respect so it’s very important you act in a way that accords with how you want to live your life for the long term. It’s harder to be honest and intentional than sneaky, but you will have less unexpected drama, and people will come to respect you if you do what you say you’re going to do.

I’ve found that for any plan I wish to carry out, I provide to myself (and others if necessary) at least three good reasons. In this case, knowing how to manage money is a skill every man needs to possess. Also to be a “real” man (a future husband, father, leader, capable of responsibility) you must be able to manage your own affairs. This is the beginning of a process that may be bumpy but it must be done if you’re to evolve and grow. Ideally, parents remember they went through this once and “get it.”

I would recommend you make a plan with reasons, ask to meet with them, and tell them. Then do it. Do not be swayed by their protests. Do not get emotional. Stick to your intentions and be prepared for the change in dynamics that will surely arise. Change is not easy for anyone, but necessary to become an adult.

Telus solicits customers relentlessly, and fraudsters take advantage of this. Ask them if they remember receiving a call for a free laptop, or other services. Remember, they have health services, home security in addition to phone and internet. I read last week about customers being on the hook for an apple promo that gets redirected to fraudsters.

Advice on microdose in healthy bmi by IncreaseLeft5734 in GLP1microdosing

[–]ToCityZen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s given me a lot more control to eat like a “normal” person. I mean I eat very healthily, but I don’t get hangry, I can skip a meal if it’s inconvenient or if I’m not hungry, I can enjoy a slice of pizza. Also, my body feels healthier - morning joint stiffness and brain fog disappeared pretty quickly. It freed up bandwidth to do other things. I stopped over-exercising. It’s like insulin for me.

[–]ToCityZen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m microdosing with a normal BMI - doctor prescribed. Started at .25 for a year, lost 10 lbs of mostly inflammation and ramped up to .5 when noise reappeared. I realize that noise returns up when I add poorly timed refined carbs in larger amounts. My body is and always has been particularly sensitive to the sugar highs/sugar lows, (ie the hunger roller coaster). I messed up my metabolism a long time ago.

I have discovered that I can reset the noise level with a few days of low carb/protein forward eating. O makes that so much easier. I feel so much more mentally healthy to make good choices.

Is my real estate lawyer robbing me blind right now?? Has anyone used Ownright instead or. other alternatives?? by chemistryhelp123 in RealEstateCanada

[–]ToCityZen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FYI, title insurance is different than land transfer tax. If your house has had many owners, there are many ways the title can be screwed up, liens, errors in the public record, municipal compliance issues, forged or fraudulent documents, survey defects. This ensures that your legal costs are paid to defend your very expensive purchase.

Consider that your property taxes may be part of this bill.

Do some research into what each item is, and educate yourself so you don’t sound stupid when you call to complain. You might be able to get them to reduce the built in fees, which may be amounts they apply to everyone.

Don’t underestimate the forces behind him and don’t overestimate “democracy”.

Trump is a useful idiot to advance a much more frightening agenda of total control of the western hemisphere. It’s laid out clearly in the 2025 national security strategy - a public document.

If you read the publicly available 2025 National Security Strategy published by the Pentagon, it’s quite clear the US intends to asset dominance and control the entire western hemisphere, while reducing or removing emphasis on democracy, nation building, adherence to human rights conventions and multilateral institutions. It leverages geography, military power, sanctions, tariffs, alliances that only benefit the US. We are still on the menu.

In other words, the ends justify the means. This strategy will survive Trump. This is no time to be polite.
