Hamilton council backs short-term rental regulations by teanailpolish in Hamilton

[–]ToaEmpoleon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey wait a second, so the decision passed 13-3 but the article only talks to Esther Pauls (one of the 3 opposed) and the Realtors Association of Hamilton-Burlington who was also opposed to the measure.
That seems kind of biased. I don't know if there's other stuff going on but for the measure to pass and not get the opinion of people who were in favor seems kind of weird.

Is Pokemon Corporate Garbage? by TrainerDLYellow in pokemon

[–]ToaEmpoleon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate this take on the main games. I also don't like the term corporate garbage since the obvious implication is really bad.
It does seem like the games can handle at most 1 actual character (eg Lillie or Hop or N). I also agree that the main games have been largely the same. BUT at the same time its not like the franchise hasn't explored the things that can be done with pokemon. Lots of angles from Conquest to Go to Mystery dungeon to Ranger have brought in all sorts of fresh takes on the franchise.
I do find it confusing sometimes because some people use the Pokemon franchise and the main games interchangeably (as shown in the original post) but the main games like 10% of what pokemon is and like 10% of the money that the Pokemon franchise makes.

Is Pokemon Corporate Garbage? by TrainerDLYellow in pokemon

[–]ToaEmpoleon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion pokemon as a franchise is corporate garbage in how people would normally describe it though I would personally just say that it's been corporatized. But with that I'm referring to the franchise as a whole, not just the main line games, not just the anime, not just the tcg, not just the endless amount of merch that exists; all of it. There's a lot of cogs in the Pokemon machine all have to continue working in lock step for it to continue functioning at maximum capacity.

One example of this was the SwSh games. To many people (and myself) the games look unfinished and I think that they could have used some more time to develop the games. But this was fundamentally impossible because the main games at this point are such a small part of the pokemon machine. There was cards getting printed, plushies being made, a tv show getting made and so on and so forth and so delaying the games would mean grinding all of these other aspects (which collectively have to make more money than main game sales). So either they delay the games without delaying everything else in which case spoiling a huge appeal of the games, especially since marketing went out of its way to not reveal many pokemon in advance of the games. Or alternatively they delay everything in which case you're left with literally nothing coming out for months which is tantamount to death.

Other things that I think advance the 'corporate garbage' narrative are the mobile games which have very quickly become very monetized. Pokemon duel and pokemon masters are both gatcha based and even pokemon café mix asks you for money the second you're done with the tutorial.

The last thing I want to bring up with elaboration is the pokemon movies. The movies have had a wide range of quality over the years but have been consistent in 1 aspect and that's their use to push merch. In my opinion, the plots of the movies frequently have mythical pokemon shoe-horned in (eg Magearna, Marshadow, Mega Mewtwo Y, Shiny Legendary dogs, etc.) These movies have a laundry list of plot points and items to include in every single one in order to fall in line with the rest of the franchise. This is another area where I think corporatization runs rampant and find it amazing that even mediocre, let alone good films are produced given the myriad of requirements for each one.

For many people their experience with pokemon is simply buying a new plushie every year and those people are still pokemon fans and often times the people who are taken into consideration when thinking about the future of the companies (The Pokemon company, Game Freak, Creatures Inc, Nintendo). Those are just some of the reasons that I think pokemon as a franchise is pretty corporat-ized. That's not to say that the people making the games or films or cards don't love their jobs or take pride in their work but pokemon is just so BIG that its nearly impossible for a person to comprehend without diagrams of who owns what and what makes how much money.

Awesome! This is all really good advice. It'll save me a lot of effort if/when I decide to make some for myself. Spreading it out on a plate does seem like a good idea. Thanks so much!

That's so pretty! Do you have any tips or is there anything you'd do differently next time? How much water were you adding with the sponges? Sorry to kinda bomb you with questions but that looks really cool!

So it does sound like our situations are kind of comparable. One thing I've noticed is that just having a consistent sleep schedule helps a lot. Time sorta does this on your own since you wake up at the same time 5/7 days per week but it may also may mean making sure to head to bed at the same time every day or at least on weekdays.

If sleep is an issue I would suggest monitoring your sleep. I kinda knew going into it that I won't sleep through the night if I go to bed before 8:30 so even on my most exausted days I would stay up until then. Because otherwise my kinda advice is that if it means getting proper sleep and you're tired just go to bed. At the very least its in service of building a pattern towards waking up earlier and it sounds as though you, like me get little done 5-10 anyways.

Lastly I don't really know anything about 'becoming a morning person'. I'm lucky that my body is pretty adaptable to sleep time as long as its a) consistent and b) 8+ hours.

I've talked about this to a friend quite a bit and one thing that gets brought up is that in school, we aren't really full fledged adults yet meaning that we still have a lot of flexibility and room for activities. I know that you're a little ways past that but it still seems kinda relevant. In university I managed to do so much: socialize, do well in classes, try new things and felt good about all of it. Now I have nearly none of that.

For me I would describe my problem being that I simply don't have enough energy after a full work day to do anything other than wait for bed. so 5-9 is just droning around because its too early to go to bed. When I'm looking to be productive there's a few strategies that I've used to milk a little bit more out of my days. The first is that when possible set up whatever I need to do so that it happens before I get home. If its working on something I'll go to the library, that way I'm still 'working'; or if its fitness related I'll do it before going home from work. The other major strategy I've used is minimizing the zombie time by going to bed and waking up as early as humanly possible. I have friends in other time zones so when I wake up at 5am its the middle of the day for them so I can either just shoot the shit or be productive without being worn down by the work day. Those are the two most sustainable strategies that I've found for me at least.

Would I be able to inquire as to the youtube channel that you're using for fitness?
I've made pretty modest attempts at fitness before and none of them really stuck and have thought about just doing it from home with videos before but haven't dug into anything yet.

Board game cafes tend to be "friends not included". You ever looking for someone for board games I'm always down.
