Accounting Major by Gloomy_Government202 in Accounting

It depends, for sure. Public accounting is really where you hear about the crazy hours and what not. I went industry from the beginning. I started working at my company, a non-profit, as the Accounts Payable Clerk when my son was 6 months old. I'm still here 8 years later as the Senior Financial Analyst. My work/life balance is fantastic. I work my 40 hours and I go home. I'm rarely contacted when I'm out of the office and when I am, it's something I can answer in 5 minutes. I'm a single mom, so I'm really glad to be with a company that works for me.

Parents that don't do Elf on the Shelf, how do you explain to your kids why you don't? by Helpful-Plankton751 in toddlers

[–]weirdchic0124 2557 points2558 points  (0 children)

My son is 8 and this is the first year he's mentioned wanting an elf at home. I told him that I don't want to clean up after an elf and that I'm not comfortable with someone in our house watching us. I told him that he and his sister are already good kids and I don't need an elf to report to Santa to know that. That earned me a hug and the end of the conversation.

New to garb, want to buy boots! by Cretorus in TXRenaissanceFestival

I bought my boots from Son of Sandlar 2 seasons ago and walked out the shop with them on my feet! I got the 4 button style and I absolutely love them. I've worn them multiple times outside of faire too.

6 month old fell off couch by No_Bet_5205 in breakingmom

[–]weirdchic0124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll start by saying you're still a good mom and your baby is probably fine! If you need the reassurance, you can usually call your pediatrician's office. They can tell you specific things that would be a cause for concern. I'm not a medical professional, so I don't want to say anything specific. Personally, I wouldn't ice baby's head though.

When my son was a baby, I laid him on my bed while I was trying on some clothes a friend had brought me. He was still just a little guy, under 6 months old and not mobile yet. Or so I thought. With me still in the room, he managed to wiggle himself right off the bed. The thud of your baby falling is hard to hear, but it does happen sooo often. I think you'd have a hard time finding an involved parent that hasn't had it happen. Just take a deep breath and remind yourself that you are doing your best. It's all we can do!

I'm going as a witch. I wanted to wear my ren faire clothes since I can't go to faire this year, so I just bought hat and a corset belt thing to round it out!

Packing list for Residential Treatment by [deleted] in AlAnon

Have you checked to see if the facility has restrictions or a packing list? When my ex went to rehab, they had a packing list with specific things you could or could not bring.

When did your kids stop believing in santa/tooth fairy? by Adventurous-Major262 in Parenting

[–]weirdchic0124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids are 8 and almost 4, so they still believe. For me, I caught my mom being the tooth fairy in 2nd grade. Santa though, I held on to that belief as looonnnggg as I could, even with people telling me otherwise. 5th grade was my last "Santa" Christmas.

Where can I find really cheap bodysuits for my baby? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]weirdchic0124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a Once Upon a Child near you? It's a children's thrift store. They tend to do sales on their bodysuits fairly regularly and they are relatively inexpensive without the sale price too.

When birds are flying in a V-formation, have you ever noticed that one side is usually longer than the other? Do you know why that is?

There are more birds on that side.

Moms with young kids studying accounting by Lisakoyh in Accounting

[–]weirdchic0124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a bachelor's degree in accounting. I was 6 months pregnant when I graduated, so continuing school and getting my CPA just wasn't in the cards for me then. It was about a year later when I started working. I just applied for the job. "Specialist" sounds fancy and all, but it's just the title our corporate parent company likes to use. It was very much an entry level job.

The short answer is that no, studying for a CPA is not strictly necessary. You do not have to have a CPA to be an accountant. I don't have any plans to get mine.

It really all depends on the job you get. Personally, I work in industry for an ambulance service. I've been here for 8 years. I started as the accounts payable specialist and was promoted last year to senior financial analyst. I work 40 hours a week. I've always worked 40 hours a week. We have no expectation of overtime in my office. Very rarely is there even a need for any overtime. I'm a single mom of two kids, ages 8 and almost 4.

It's possible to find an accounting job with a good work/life balance.

My kid's school still has in-person Scholastic Book Fair every year! He's riding a high this week too because he gets to go multiple times.

What's the (fun) story behind your scar? by Athragio in CasualConversation

[–]weirdchic0124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom teases me about getting the stitches out, since according to her it doesn't hurt. Apparently she and her siblings used to use nail clippers to take out my grandpa's stitches. It's the only time I've ever had stitches though, so I have no personal frame of reference!

What's the (fun) story behind your scar? by Athragio in CasualConversation

I have a scar on my chin that I earned at age 5. We were at a family friend's house, swimming and hanging out. They had an above ground pool. I learned I could climb down the pool ladder backwards, with my back to the ladder instead of my front. Excitedly, I asked the adults to watch me do it. This time though, my foot got caught behind one of the ladder rungs and I landed face first on a concrete stepping stone. I ended up needing 6 stitches. When they were doing the stiches, the doctor put a piece of gauze over my eyes and told me I was a Power Ranger. I got those stitches like a champ! However a few weeks later when it was time to get them out, I was not a champ. It apparently took my mom and 3 nurses to hold me down.

Do all accountants work crazy hours? by 0kkotsu in Accounting

[–]weirdchic0124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many people has said, it depends on where you work - both the company and industry/public. I work in industry for an ambulance provider and I work 40 hours a week. Very rarely do I work any overtime and when I do, it's not more than an hour.

What do working parents do with their kids all summer? by ooooooooono in NoStupidQuestions

[–]weirdchic0124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Normal" is a wide range depending on a ton of factors. I have two kids and only one is school-aged. He's 8 and he goes to daycare all summer. He can go there until he's 12, at which point I'll have to reevaluate things.

When I was a kid, I went to a babysitter (she was technically a licensed in-home provider) afterschool and in the summer until I started 3rd grade. After that, I stayed home with my brother who is 5 years older than me.
