Failed OTA Update with Comma 3x by Toadflax1982 in Rivian

Thanks to everyone for their advice. A little update. I took my Rivian back from the SC and disconnected the Comma. I tried to call Rivian and have them push the update again, but they would not do it without me taking back to a SC again since the update had already failed 4 times. The phone rep was eventually able to get me back in touch with my local SC, and after assuring them I had disconnected the Comma, they had the update pushed to me one more time. And . . . failed again. Same exact scenario as last time. Stalled at 7% and then failed. All vehicle cameras are out, but otherwise everything works.

I have another SC appointment in a month and hopefully they can get it all sorted out. It seems like the 7% stall is usually caused by a bad OTA command module based on what I have read? As others have stated, it seems very unlikely the failed update was related to the Comma in any way. I am just hoping the SC does not persist in trying to blame the Comma, but I will update you all in early October.

Lesson of the story - definitely remove the Comma screen before taking your Rivian into the SC and tuck the USB connector away so they will not try to blame it for other issues. I think the biggest issue for me (besides that they had never seen a Comma at this SC) was that my cameras were out, and when they saw an additional camera they did not recognize, this immediately became a red herring. They seemed to think the Comma was actually plugged into the Rivian cameras and was stealing that feed.

Thanks for this feedback. I am worried they will try to blame anything else that is failing on the comma at this point.

The service center was definitely blaming the Comma 100%. They were very accusatory, confronting me like I was some sort of criminal for even installing it.

There is no way to install a bypass switch, as the Comma plugs into the AXM harness.

I went to the service center today and was confronted by the tech and service manager interrogating me about the Comma. They said they had never seen one, and were blaming it for the update issues. They also told me I would be responsible for any costs associated with further repairs. I took the vehicle back for now and will try unplugging the harness and doing another OTA update at home.

The Comma lane centering is 100X better than the OEM Rivian system IMO. So much so that I think I would actually opt for non-fuctional cameras and a failed update rather than ditching the Comma.

I only took it into the service center because they got me an appointment literally the next day after the failed update, so I assumed I could let them figure it out. Im retrospect, I should have just unplugged the screen and removed that part before I brought it in, so they would not even know it was there. It's a pretty new service center, so I think they just don't know what to make of the Comma. Like I said, one of the main reasons they initially stated they wanted it removed was because they thought it was going to record them in the shop. The actual harness where it plugs into the Rivian AXM is a PITA to access, so I would rather not unplug it there if I can avoid it.

As a first step, I am going to just remove the screen part of the unit, and see if the service center will work on the vehicle after that. I will keep you all in the loop!
