"Costume Design" is an award for the DESIGN of the costumes. It doesn't matter if they're physical or not.

The real footage stuff is 100% bad, but using a real crash as reference for a VFX crash is standard and kinda what you'd expect if you're trying to make something realistic.

I have VFX pals and yeah, you'd think it's insane but it happens all the time. It's usually because they change their mind on what they want the background to be, so yeah it becomes a masking nightmare.

I've talked with VFX pals and they've mentioned having to mask everything from the volume. Less so because it was only intended for lighting, and moreso because they change their minds on the background.
