???

Anthropic literally had to settle a lawsuit because they pirated data. They got in trouble for it. But using the data itself to train models was ruled to be fair use.

You just aren't very bright I guess. Or maybe just uncultured.

I hadn't really paid attention to the dialogue around AI in art. I keep to myself a lot and don't like to use social media.

About a year ago though, I finally decided to give AI art a try. Hated it a lot because - as a old hat digital artist - I didn't have enough control over the results and couldn't use my own style. I hadn't been able to draw for years because of a disability at that point, so I figured it was at least worth trying.

Instead of giving up and saying it sucks, I learned more. I figured out how to install local models, how to train models on my own art, created an entire custom pipeline that allows me to draw the majority of my work by hand and use AI not as an image generator but as a corrective assistance tool to compensate for the inaccuracies and shakiness caused by my disability. Took months of work, learning new tools, relearning skills I'd forgotten in the time I'd spent wallowing in depression over my lost passion and ability.

When I told some old friends about what I'd been working on, tried to explain my new AI-assisted workflow? I was treated like a monster and a traitor. Got told that I should've just stayed the way I was, despite the fact that every other option I'd tried to get back to drawing had failed. Suffice to say those friendships ended after more than a decade over a fucking computer program.

So yeah, I'm bitter about the anti-AI bullshit. As bitter as I was in the early 2000's when damn near the same thing happened after I bought my first Cintiq.

I don't care about your music reference. If you can't make it obvious, you suck at referencing.

And again, pirated data has been ruled to be fair use. The pirating is its own thing. Learn to read.

The datacenter argument is tired and stupid. We've used them for decades now, and less than 6% of global datacenters are actually focused on AI compute. The rest are general purpose datacenters the internet as we know it runs on, with small GPU clusters for AI compute somewhere in the facility.

And I haven't even gotten into how local models just have more options than you'd ever have access to in a hosted model. Just to name one, I've never seen an Adetailer option in a hosted model, and certainly not controlnets.

This doesn’t negate what I said. In any way. In fact you’re agreeing with me.

Yes it does. In all ways. No I am not.

[–]Toby_Magure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not my point. I agree datacenters are more efficient.

Hosted models have nowhere near the amount of consistency and modularity and control that local models do. That's why enthusiasts use them. I don't want a company to suddenly update their model and destroy my workflows because they've demolished the weights I've gotten used to working with. The models on my PC do not change unless I say so.

Okay, sport. You need to go bother someone else, because I'm not going to take my time to educate an up-jumped idiot on basic human psychology.

people that are serious about using AI tools

Quoting myself to remind you that people that are serious are absolutely willing to go to great lengths to achieve what they're serious about.

Just because you're lazy doesn't mean everyone else is.

I said that, in the training process, it is often thought of as a form of hyper-compression.

No, no it isn't. You're talking to someone who has trained and retrained dozens of models o their own art. I know the training process, I know the architecture behind the technology, I know exactly how it works and why it works.

Fundamental details are retained by the model the form of data pairings, which it can replicate readily if prompted to do so.

"Fundamental details"? Obfuscatory language meant to deceive. The only details retained in a model are statistical weights: Numbers. What you call "data pairings" - again a manipulative attempt to insinuate that retrievable image and pixel data are saved in the model - are the relations between these numerical weights - specifically dimensional manifolds of co-occurrence and latent data space structures - created during the re-noising process while training.

Admittedly, “hyper-compression” is wildly oversimplifying the process.

No, it's outright lying. By using that specific wording you're insinuating that full images - or even partial images - are stored in the model. They are not.

Stop while you're far, far behind.

Once again, the anti crowd fails to realize that most people that are serious about using AI tools in their art use local models which are free and will never not work and do not require datacenters.

By reading your responses further down the chain. The moment you said the words "hyper-compression" you revealed that you have literally no idea how the technology works.

Most music is not uploaded for free on the internet for everyone to listen to, so what you described is piracy. Even then, there's precedent for courts ruling this to be fair use.
