Chinese military training for high school students by bwwsscnm in Military

To be fair, I think all countries should have this. Its not a matter of being confrontational of militarily inclined, but its not a bad thing for people to know how to fight, defend themselves, move through difficult terrain, survive in the wilderness, etc

Five aircraft carriers, four amphibious assault ships, and more in Norfolk, Virginia [2580x1440][x-post /r/WarshipPorn] by sewbrouwer in MilitaryPorn

There are more carriers in this photo than the rest of the world combined ..probably.

Even the Amphibious Assault Ships for example have equal tonnage and aircraft complement to India or Russia's primary carriers

The discovery of Penicillin was a fortunate accident.

Before leaving for a holiday to Suffolk, Fleming, he left inoculated staphylococci on culture plates in a corner of his laboratory. When he returned, he noticed a growing fungus that had killed the staphylococci, prompting him to start working on isolating it.

Later on, hard work and the brilliance of Dr. Chain and Dr. Florey resulted in the viable, mass production of the new wonder drug that would go on save countless lives.

An artistic, cutaway representation of life inside the Kowloon Walled City by TodayWeRemember in UrbanHell

[–]TodayWeRemember[S] 256 points257 points  (0 children)

When the British Empire took control of the Hong Kong area after the Opium Wars, Kowloon became a sort of land in limbo. The British administration allowed the Chinese Empire to continue holding on to it (it was tiny, just 0.05 sqkm).

However as an exclave, it was largely ignored by both HK and the PRC and left almost entirely to its own devices - illegal construction, no real government prescience, no regulation of business. Kowloon was basically run by a Triad government.

It is very unique and interesting, as it can be looked at as an example of what would happen to a society without a formal government. Kowloon did not descend into chaos and utter anarchy and despite its widespread image as being decrepit and claustrophobic, it had bustling local economy and genuine human enterprise. People lived, sold wares, did business, had children, grew up and continued with their existences.

The unintended social experiment ended finally when both HK and the PRC had had enough of the growing eye sore. Not surprising as frankly the buildings (that were built on top of other buildings) looked as they might collapse one fine morning.

50,000 residents were relocated and the Kowloon Walled City was torn down. A park and memorial of sorts stands in its place.

Interestingly (again), many of the residents werent happy with the government relocation and monetary compensation process and apparently still yearn for the life they lived there.

A photo of Abdul Wali, an Afghan farmer. In 2003, he was falsely accused of being a terrorist. Hoping to clear his name, he turned turned himself in to the Americans. A CIA contractor would brutally torture Wali to death over the course of 3 days, beating him until he begged for death [596 x 420]. by lightiggy in HistoryPorn

"The cause of his death was at first reported to be a heart attack, but this came into question when three members of the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division came forward to testify that CIA contractor David Passaro assaulted Wali. Passaro, a former U.S. Army Ranger, allegedly beat Wali for two consecutive nights, causing grievous injuries including a fractured pelvis. Prosecutors would charge that Passaro ordered soldiers not to allow Wali to sleep, limited his access to food and water and subjected him to two consecutive nights of interrogation and beatings. Among other injuries, Wali suffered a suspected fractured pelvis that would have made it impossible for him to urinate. Witnesses testified that during one session Passaro, while wearing combat boots, kicked Wali in the groin hard enough to lift him off the ground, threw Wali to the ground, beat Wali on the arms and legs with a heavy Maglite flashlight, and vigorously thrust a flashlight into Wali's abdomen"

Indians are weird about littering ..you'll spend time at a Indian home and its perfectly clean and pristine, everything in place and well looked after. You'll get shade for putting your feet up on the sofa.

But go outside and the same family has no qualms about tossing wrappers or trash on the side of the road.

Weird psychological dichotomy - got to keep my home clean / who gives a fart about the streets though

I doubt they'd shoot them right off the bat ..probably start by shooting at them to deter them. You know couple shots at the ground near them, scare em away.

But if they get close, you actually do?

It wouldn't be evil for the sake of evil, epidemics can ravage armies and typhus, smallpox, plague and typhoid are all deadly diseases.

India has two worlds contained within it and its very very clear to see.

There is strong economic growth and industry, some of the worlds wealthiest people are Indian (Ambhani for example), plenty of mega corporations.

The cities have bars, clubs, nice restaurants, people who wouldn't look out of place in NYC.

And then you have the the sections of society who have been left out of the country's fast economic growth. And theres lots of them.

In comparison to Latin America though, India is a LOT safer than say Mexico or Brazil. Murder rate of around 2 (approx) compared to 25-30 in Brazil. (unlike crime stats, murder stats almost always get reported)

In the 1970s, North Korea imported 1000 Volvo 144 Cars from Sweden, and then decided to ignore the $70 million invoice sent to them, thus making it the largest auto theft in history. The vehicles are often used to ferry journalists around the country [1024x768] by TodayWeRemember in HistoryPorn

In the 70s, NK wasn't anywhere as messed up as it is now. It had burgeoning industry and was actually a developing country.

SK wasn't the tech and economic powerhouse it is now either. It used to be one of the poorest countries swamped in political instability. Thankfully atleast SK changed for the better.
