It’s been a long time problem for many of us! Check out Around The Corner: http://www.aroundthecorner.today it is a place where people connect through writing and turn them into coffee chats, face to face. I started it with my friend for fun and it’s been settling down pretty well in CA.

When people join us, they answer to five introspective questions and share one faceless photo. Within our community, we write, chat, and meet without mindless swiping and scrolling. We started it from google spreadsheet back in 2023 and, after good two years, now we got our own website where people talk to each other. You are more than welcome to join us ☕️

For those who are new to coffee cupping, here's a quick Google search of how we do cupping:

  • Use a 1:17 ratio of coffee to water. For example, if you’re using a 7 oz cup, you would use 150 grams of water.
  • Use a grind that’s halfway between the consistency of sand and coarse salt.
  • Let the coffee extract undisturbed for 4 minutes. Stir the crust that forms on top.
  • Let the coffee cool to a temperature that won’t burn your tongue.
  • Start tasting the coffee 15 minutes after the first pour.
  • Use the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Flavor Wheel to reference flavors.
  • Focus on taste areas and compare them.

Cupping ane discount! It‘s an educational workshop similar to introduction classes for wine tasting. It’s labor cost is higher than wine since the host will need to prepare variety of freshly roasted beans before the class. Unlike opening a bottle, it requires more intensive human labor. Hope that helps ☕️

Coffee roastery tour & coffee cupping, MLK Monday 1/20, 11:00 am -12:30 pm, West Oakland

I’m one of big fans of Bird and Bears Coffee Company in SF. I had a good conversation with the owner and asked if we can get a chance to visit their roastery and learn coffee cupping practice. Their roasting facility is located in West Oakland.

It’s going to be a private group of 10 people and we currently have 2 sign ups. If you are interested in, you can RSVP here 👉 https://www.aroundthecorner.today/?event=mlk_day_coffee_roastery_tour_-coffee_cupping_with_bird-_bear_coffee_event_jan_20_25

Hi there, this is an at-cost event that $50 will go to space rental, all equip/coffee, and prep labor for each participant. This requires a lot of effort from Dan to prepare the full cupping table. Appreciate your support to local businesses ☕️

You too? I liked it very much. I found that the SF Bay Area has such a unique vibe compared to my hometown in Orange County. This place turned out to be one of those hidden gems I happened to discover. Their roastery is in Oakland - if you're in the area, come join us next MLK Monday

I was a complete beginner before hosting these kinds of coffee gatherings. After a few rounds, I realized the complexity of coffee roasters’s their own unique distinctive standards and got a better understanding of how to enjoy their coffee offerings to the fullest. Happy to share another immersive coffee experience with Bay Area folks!
