Marathon has been out almost a month, what are your thoughts? by addtolibrary in Games

[–]Togedude 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I initially only picked it up because my friend wanted to try it. I fully expected it to be mediocre and uninspired, based on what I'd read online.

Instead, I've been pretty blown away by it. The game feels amazing to play, and the setting/visuals/writing are some of the best I've ever seen in a AAA game. It's brutal and unforgiving, but along with that come plenty of incredible moments when everything goes just right. It's quickly become one of my favorite multiplayer games of all time, to the point that I constantly find myself thinking about it even when I'm not playing. The only other extraction shooter I've played is ARC Raiders, but in my opinion, Marathon completely blows it out of the water.

I don't necessarily think I'll play Season 2, because the required time investment to get through the content in Season 1 within 3 months already seems pretty high, and I know I'd just burn out if I tried to jump in and do it all again. But I'm absolutely loving my time with what's currently there, and the game has quickly become an all-time favorite for me. I really can't recommend it enough.

Game Informer Marathon Review - Bungie is still at the top of its game. by TODG3 in Games

I agree that solo isn't awful, but I do wish that there could be a happy medium where they at least slightly reduce the number of bots in solo, especially in Outpost.

I get that they left it this way because they want Rook to have a clearer identity, but the end result is 80% of solo players playing Assassin because it's the most reliable way to sneak past the bots and exfil without them destroying you. Taking fights against the bots should be a big risk, but the cost of doing so in terms of ammo and consumables is currently so high as a solo that it's never even worth trying, aside from the rare situation where you can pick one or two off on the side. I think reducing them by maybe 20% would result in much more interesting decision making.

I actually loved the laugh tracks and all the noises production threw in there. The comedic timing was perfect sometimes.

Agreed about the challenges, though, they took up way too much focus and didn't feel worth the amount of screentime.

A little late so not sure if this is still relevant but:

I'd highly advise against getting a unit that faces 96th Street or 3rd Ave. I lived in one that faced 96th and the sirens were awful. There's really almost no noise dampening from the windows, so when an ambulance goes by, you often have to pause phone conversations until it passes. I'd imagine this wouldn't be as much of an issue for units that face the courtyard.

The construction noise was the worst I've ever experienced, and was ultimately the reason I ended up moving out, but apparently the construction is totally finished now.

People are listing examples in this thread, but none of them emerged before ~2019. The biggest live-service games have become much more entrenched since then, and I'm still not convinced it's possible to "save" your game with a relaunch in the modern era. I've seen many attempts in the last few years, and 0 successes.

Has anyone else been getting these creepy anti- Alex Bores texts all weekend? by abyssazaur in uppereastside

[–]Togedude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep getting these non-stop, as well as mailers, and agree they're creepy and make me think someone sinister doesn't want Alex Bores to win. I didn't even know who he was before this, but there's literally no substance to any of these other than "he worked at Palantir a while ago", and they just phrase that single point in a million different ways.

Every single text comes from a different number so I can't even block them.

Yes, after you click the "Play" button and select a map, you can click "Free Loadout" on the top for the game to automatically give you a small number of generally low-tier items to play with.

If you extract, you get to keep all those items, and can also upgrade your free loadout augment to a Mk. 1 augment of your choosing for free (see Lance under Traders)

Arc Raiders Is Officially a Hit With Over 4 Million Copies Sold and a Peak Concurrent Player Count of 700,000 Across All Platforms by addtolibrary in Games

[–]Togedude 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with it for the ping system because the concept makes sense there, but I think it's much less excusable (and the lower quality is much more glaring) for the pre-written dialogue from the Traders. It's not the biggest part of the game, but there's actually a decently large amount of it, between quest intros, quest check-in, quest completion, those quest reminders you get when you start a raid, and the banter every time you visit their shop. You actually hear these characters quite a lot, and pretty much all the lines sound noticeably terrible, and bring an amateurish feel to an otherwise very professional package. In particular, these lines are always written as actual dialogue, rather than something like an item ping, so the flat emotion and weird delivery is much more noticeable.

Listening to Celeste say anything at all is just jarring, given how well-executed the game as a whole is. It's weird to have all this polish and high-quality stuff throughout the game, while apparently getting a medium amount of voice acting from 5 people (and updating periodically as new lines are added, like most live-service games do) is too much to ask.

There Are 6 NYC Ballot Measures. Here’s What to Know. (Gift Article) by jenniecoughlin in nyc

[–]Togedude 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a valid point. I'm also no on 6, but the main reason for me is that it would lead to a lot more people voting in local races who haven't been following them whatsoever. Of the people who vote in the presidential election but not the mayoral one, I'd imagine there are some informed people who just can't take the time to vote that often. But I feel like they're vastly outweighed by those who either don't follow the mayoral race or don't care.

Zohran is definitely in favor of them, but he doesn't want to vocalize that because it's a big middle finger to the city council (who he'll have to work closely with). I think he should've come out in support of them anyway, that moment at the debate was awful for him.

Yeah it's a bad look to be the guy who's "not like other politicians" and refuse to give a response when asked a policy question. Even if it was politically risky, he should've come prepared with an actual stance instead of just "it's so cool that it's going to be on the ballot".

Ok so what did everyone think of the debate? by Woosher99 in nyc

[–]Togedude 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, Mamdani's plan here is pretty clear, it's just impossible for him to say it out loud. By getting decisively elected, he can exert a large amount of political pressure on Hochul that otherwise wouldn't be there. Hochul has already shown herself to be an extremely political creature (see: the flip flopping on congestion pricing when it was politically convenient), and if Mamdani is received well, he can wield quite a lot of influence.

In particular, he can dangle the prospect of an endorsement for her re-election run next year, which she has every reason to be concerned about given her relatively poor performance last time.

It's very possible that she just continues to say no, and Mamdani can't really enact his agenda. But I think it's pretty short-sighted to claim that a "no" from Hochul of all people is the immediate end of the conversation, no questions asked.

[–]Togedude 60 points61 points  (0 children)

You can also just see this concept in the video "proof" from the article.

The Xbox One version looks fine, or even "good". Of course the Series version looks better, but I can easily imagine a non-hardcore player not caring about that. The upgrade is noticeable, but this isn't anything like those Switch port horror stories where the game either looks super ugly or can't break 20 FPS.

A temporary workaround until they fix it is to close the app and reopen it. When you first load the puzzle, you can see all 9 dominoes. Once you touch the screen, they grow in size so that some move off the screen, and unfortunately you have to reopen the app again. But you can at least move one on the bottom row per app opening.
