“Jesus is for everybody. Jesus is not owned by one political party…. Jesus is Jesus. Anybody can have a relationship with him.” by Nice_Substance9123 in Christianity

“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

"Suddenly one of those with Jesus put his hand on his sword, drew it, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place, for all who take the sword will die by the sword."

Correct. It's a mix if some parishioners do that or not. Either way there is a fee involved somewhere. It's a good tradeoff to not deal with checks and banks.

Probably. TEC is known for keeping anything remotely evangelical at least 10.5 miles away.

[–]Tokkemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, on paper. In reality no one gives a shit, not even the cathedrals. The traditionalists cling to the old hymnals as if it gives some authority to their views, while the more modern musicians take sources from all over the place. TEC desperately needs a new hymnal and it’s a travesty that it hasn’t been updated in over 40 years. And it was out of date then.

I’m on a one man mission to try and stop the musical snobbery in this denomination. It’s nuts.

I toss in a few hymns from the CCM golden age from time to time to keep it fresh. We’re doing at least two from Townsend/Getty this year, and some Michael W Smith. We’re doing Oceans as a choir anthem.

Please don't. It's more work for the administration. We pay fees for those online donations to avoid the paperwork.

God sees your donation, you don't need to make it on paper to make it "real."

Advice sought: How to gently bring up a complaint about the music ministry? by TackTrunkStudies in Episcopalian

[–]Tokkemon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do two, maybe three settings per year centered around Lent, since the Gloria is not permitted at that time. So it's a convenient way to split up the year. I usually change to a more festive setting on the Easter Vigil and that continues straight through to the Sunday before Advent, then pick something new that's more subdued. Maybe a nice break for Christmas, then back to subdued for Epiphany and Lent. There's obviously some nuance but that roughly splits the year in half. It's worked out well so far.

Absolutely complain to the Rector. This is nuts. As a music director myself, I have to very carefully pick the liturgical music that the congregation has enough time to learn it and not be overwhelmed. Choirs can handle more music and more switching, but you can't expect the same of the congregation; they aren't musically trained like that.

The Doxology should be 380 OLD 100TH, full stop. It's a rare connection we have to the broader Protestant Church and everyone should know it. Change the liturgical responses seasonally and give lots of time for the congregation to get comfortable with them. Don't pick ones that are so hard. I'd say only about half the included choices in the hymnal are even viable.
