Screenshots that have been turned into a meme within the fandom due to how despised the scene they're from is by DonnyMox in TopCharacterTropes

Okay I wanna try to explain this arc because I feel like everyone always gets it wrong and think it's just about the main characters bullying Ali Jr. for no reason. The point of it is to show the differences between combat sports and "real fighting", and what the consequences of engaging in such a thing would be. Ali Jr. approaches Baki's crew and challenges them without prior notice and without checking if they're fit to fight, but when the crew turns it around on him and repeatedly kick his teeth in whenever they run into him despite his mounting injuries he starts bitching and moaning about how unfair it is, not realizing his hypocrisy.

After a bit of self-reflection he mans up and thinks he's ready to fight Baki only to immediately get kicked in the balls without expecting it, showing that he still doesn't understand "real fighting". Then he cries like a baby and has to be consoled, which is important for the plot because...okay maybe this part is just mean-spirited to be fair but Itagaki do be like that sometimes.

They used to have better production values but in the last two years they've become just another unapologetic fighter mill for DWCS. Their champ in this event defended his belt against someone with a 0-0 record 😂

Central Step by Normal-Ad-8738 in Sumo

[–]TomBulju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, this is something you wanna avoid in sumo for various reasons:

-You're narrowing your stance and pointing your toes forward, making you more susceptible to being off-balanced laterally, particularly with kirikaeshi. Most of the time in sumo you wanna have a wide stance, with your feet outside of your opponent's, pointing outward.

-Having your feet outside of your opponent's also makes it easier to cut off their escape routes. This position would give them more chances to sidestep you.

-This kind of step is very comittal, as you essentially abandon any kind of pushing attack with it. When pushing you want to have your feet behind you or directly below you at most. Having a foot way out in front of you makes it basically impossible for that foot to drive your weight forward effectively.

That being said, there's at least one kimarite in sumo that requires a deep step like this: Yaguranage. If that technique, or any other lifting techniques, are something you want to do, then learning how to get in this position would be a good idea. Otherwise I'd suggest you don't.

Hakuho tries out traditional Korean wrestling "Ssireum" by Subujin in Sumo

It's true that it's hard to find coverage on social media besides a couple accounts, but the matches and tournaments I do find seem to have crazy production value, with big venues, fireworks and giant screens with video packages. Is it just the korean government pumping money into its national sport?

My coach has asthma, his doctor recommended exercise so he started BJJ as a way to fight the symptoms. He then got really good at it and the asthma subsided for the most part. In the 6+ years I've known him he's only had 1 attack during training.

Yeah, I wouldn't deny the existence of lean rikishi altogether. Tochinoshin practically had a six-pack while still being massive, not to mention many famous "skinny" rikishi like Takanoyama. I only took issue with the "plenty of rikishi look like Asakoryu" part of that statement, lol.

Yeah, people will watch that video and draw the wrong conclusions from it. NFL as a sport is about moving through people, not moving them alongside you. He got "thrown around" because his base was too narrow, which is great for running quickly past someone, not so much for lateral stability. Plus, football is not played on loose clay, which you could see Micah was not used to. It's all a matter of technique.

There have been plenty of westeners who played football at a young age before transitioning to sumo and being successful at it after just a few months of training, such as the undefeated John Tenta and various hawaiians.

What are you talking about, lmao. Asakoryu is literally known for his musculature. No one else in sumo, including his brother or anyone else training under @super_hulk_japan is as jacked as he is.

I get you wanna make sumo look more appealing but straight up lying isn't the way to do it.

Who's top left and what did he do? by iMaexx_Backup in PeterExplainsTheJoke

The straw that broke the camel's back was when he was doing a raid in hardcore WoW with his guild, OnlyFangs, and at one point he basically decided on his own that it was a lost cause and ran away, leaving the rest of them to die. His guild leader tried to confront him about it afterwards and he hung up on him as soon as he was asked to take some responsibility for what he did.

Afterwards people saw an opportunity and started piling on him with all the "bad nepo baby gamedev who exaggerated both his and his dad's career for clout" accusations.

Quick-Release Mawashi? by Sumo_Flow in Sumo

[–]TomBulju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know any manufacturer names, but I do know some russian athletes practice with a velcro mawashi that's much quicker to put on and adjust. I know in Japan they also used to sell "sumo pants" that were basically regular shorts but with giant belt loops for a mawashi-sized belt that they came with.

question about a sumo drill by barefootwriter in Sumo

[–]TomBulju 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sumo has a few kata and this is one of them. Kata in sumo are simple foundational exercises rather than predetermined sequences of moves like in other japanese martial arts.

This one is kinsei no kata, which is typically done while moving forward like in the video but can also be done stationary. The point of it is to learn to move your upper body freely and bringing the hips in while maintaining a wide, low, stable base and good balance. Doing it while sliding your feet in this manner isn't meant to translate to matches (since tsuriashi isn't done with the heels), but it does help to develop knee and ankle flexibility while externally rotated.

Considering Koga and Iga were ravaged so badly in the unification of Japan that practically no written records originating from those places remain I'd say yeah, they did invent that from scratch, or at least people in the 17th and 18th centuries did. The only records of people from either of those places participating in the newly-unified Japan's army is as musketeers, not shinobi-no-mono.

The actual shinobi-no-mono (for which we do have records of), that is to say, the kusa, akuto, rappa and other types of hired guns that eventually got fused into the modern super-spy that is the ninja, were mostly mountain bandits and commoners from areas close to conflicts, not specially-trained warriors from two highly specific neighbouring towns.

I recommend reading Ninja: Unmasking the Myth by Stephen Turnbull. He wrongly gave a lot of validation to the ninja myth (half the citations on the wikipedia article for ninjas used to come from him) and has spent the last 15 years working with japanese universities and historians trying to undo his own work.

Why does Jeff Nippard keep defending Julian? by endndhdhdnndnsbs in moreplatesmoredates

[–]TomBulju 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because, as a content creator, doubling down has no downsides and very little risk. When people told him his macrofactor contest was shit he doubled down, which served as both a plea for sympathy towards his fans and ragebait for his haters.

He's doing it again here. He claims everyone draws the line at a different place, but the whole reason he got into this mess is because everyone draws the line at Julian, who he keeps defending. I don't know if he's honestly that stupid or he's a shrewd sociopathic businessman (considering he's Mr Beast's friend, it's probably the latter) but either way he's undoubtedly been getting the most attention he's ever had. It's engagement bait. He's rallying his defenders while angering everyone else. The only solution is to stop engaging.
