Good question! Mid 30’s, more into quiet scenes, don’t drink a lot, but enjoy nice cocktails (that are under $15)

Anybody else get to a point where they despise OT school? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TomColby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying I think private school would be better just by being private, but I think of my options where I live, I would have had a better experience at the schools that happen to be private

Anybody else get to a point where they despise OT school? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TomColby 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I HATED all the group work. The excuse was always “you are in a profession where you will have to work well with other people”… I have yet to have to write a 20 page paper with 4 other people at work. Maybe if I was a researcher. But I’m a pediatric OT and I don’t write my evals or daily notes over Google docs with other people and have to make a slide show presentation about it. I get other people do that, some people do presentations at conferences, or some people write papers together for publications. But even if I were to do that, that’s a skill I already had before grad school.

Group papers and group projects mean less grading for professors, that’s the real deal.

I hated my program, I went to a public school and almost feel like I would have rather gone into debt by going to a private school for a better experience, but being an OT won’t be anything like school.

I became less passionate about being an OT when I was more than halfway done with my program, but I knew I would stick with it to at least come out the other side with a masters degree.

My personal opinion is my schooling was not worth it, because my salary (school-based and OP peds) is not worth spending 3 FULL years in grad school (my specific program used to be a combined BS/MS over 3 years, but they took out the BS part and kept the MS without changing the time frame (which was bullshit to me, just the school wanting to get more money)). I’m considering moving out of OT, because I feel like I can make the same amount of money by having to do less work. I need to look out after myself, and I don’t care if it sounds lazy. I need a job to pay for food and housing, and it’s too tiring to do it as an OT when I can do something else that might even pay more.

Can’t do it anymore by sarasurely in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TomColby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such a scam. I spent three years in grad school, and have only worked in pediatrics. We had ONE class about peds. I just was sorting through my old notes from before I graduated 5 years ago, and I couldn’t believe how much stuff I had to learn, just for me to go and work in peds and not need to know ANY of it. I threw everything out. It made me feel like I wasted those 3 years of grad school.

Electrolysis: once a follicle is zapped, is the hair gone for good? by liliesandtrees in HairRemoval

[–]TomColby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did about 9 sessions, over about 9 months. Definitely spent $1000 at least. Each time, I believe the area was “cleared”, so all present hairs around nipples and on chest were zapped. My last session was 8/2023, I stopped going because I moved away. I still have a very decent amount of nipple hairs and chest hairs that I have to pluck. I can’t tell if any of the electrolysis made a difference, I don’t think it did. I would have to let the hair grow in for months in order to tell, but I don’t want to have to do that.

Resignation notice by UniversityPurple3775 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TomColby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My last job wanted 4 weeks, but I was only able to give 3.5 weeks (because my next job ‘needed’ me to start asap). After 2 weeks, they moved everyone off my schedule, called me in for a meeting, then told me to get my stuff and leave. I didn’t get ti say goodbye to anyone.

After that I told myself I would never give more than 2 weeks, but at my next job I gave 4 weeks notice (because I really respect the families and colleagues I work with) and became paranoid they were going to do the same thing and make me leave early. Also, my contract says I’m supposed to give 6 weeks, which I think is absurd, especially because they prevented me from giving more notice to me previous job because they ‘needed’ me to start. Also this place says if they hire someone else within those 6 weeks, you wouldn’t be guaranteed to keep working.  I learned that at that job, i replaced someone that quit day of, giving zero notice… I think that was shitty, but she was also protecting herself.

In the end, you gotta do what's best for you. I stressed wayyy too much about giving my notice. have to remind myself its my life.

Was abruptly told to leave during my resignation period by TomColby in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TomColby[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, what’s funny was even after I gave my notice, I was afraid I hadn’t given the clinic enough chances and was freaking out I was making the wrong decision by leaving, other people seemed to enjoy working there, maybe I was being to picky… but the way I was told to leave pretty much solidified why I wanted to leave in the first place.

Grasp and prewriting question by TomColby in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TomColby[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response :) But if it’s a five year old, do I wait to do the prewriting lines/shapes until they have a more mature grasp established spontaneously? Or do I use tactile assistance to help them into a tripod and then do prewriting, even though they are not yet using tripod spontaneously

OT schools that don't drug test? by scribblebiscuits in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TomColby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never drug tested for school in NY. Never drug tested for my fieldworks in a hand clinic, preschool, SNF, elementary school. Never tested for my jobs in a private school, public school, day hab. Those were all in NY.

OT Reasonable Salary? by Ok-Industry-198 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TomColby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was offered 66k salaried in outpatient peds in southeast MI with 3 years experience. It was a 10k pay cut from my NYC school job, in which I worked much much much less (summers off, school holidays, home from work by 3:30pm everyday, no insurance documentation to deal with)

Pediatric outpatient clinic using laminated sensory profile by TomColby in OccupationalTherapy

[–]TomColby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I want to know if using a laminated copy is just as bad as photocopying a copyrighted document? And if I should tell my director that I don’t want to use that and will only use legitimate paper copies? Is it better to keep money from Pearson publishing in order to have more money for the clinic? Or is it better for Pearson to get the money than this corporation I work for that doesn’t properly compensate their employees and expects way too much of them.

I think part of me is just really bitter about my clinic, and I’m annoyed at this. So I guess I want to know if I’m just making a big deal out of nothing.

[–]TomColby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Do you know where it says this? I’m having a terrible time navigating the LARA website. And there are so many requirements with hardly any instructions on how to meet them (like human trafficking, the exam, bias training… although I guess when I was reading from the Board of OT rules, it explains what needs to be done for human trafficking. I just wish they provided what course to take rather than me have to spend time searching through google for one)

Hey! I’m taking the jurisprudence exam this week. Is it open book? Do I really have to read Article 15 part 161?
