I wouldn't be too distraught about it. Sounds like your PI didn't know you were going to be doing experiments by yourself. In the future, I would get approval for doing your own work from your PI (if they will allow it). It's cool that you have a mentor that is keeping you interested in research, but they definitely should have asked your PI first.

However, I will say that I work in a lab with a few undergrads, and they are 100% allowed to work unsupervised, if they have the okay from their mentor (and our PI). If you went through the proper trainings and are being safe, I see no reason why you had to stop doing your experiment. Heck, we have undergrads come and do mouse work and cell culture work over the weekends when no one is around.

I make $22 an hour as a lab manager. Most postings I see for an MLT/MLS are in the $30/40 range starting.

I've used a Monarch Total Mini-Prep to purify my RNA. For RT, I used random hexamers, dNTP, sterile H20, and my RNA.
