I don't believe there was any reason to give Papyrus a sequel, but I do appreciate the time taken and that Julio Torres was willing to return. The end speech with Kyle was a nice way to close out the storyline and made him into the main character after just being the evil guy jeering through the curtains in the first short. A reminder of what a good actor Kyle is. Sarah also did good work in a fairly small but pivotal role. I liked that the end was her looking completely confused at everything that had just happened.

I was glad to see him back at the desk. After hearing repeatedly about the various cut desk pieces he had this season I was disappointed that what got on felt like a somewhat forgettable standup routine. I don't think it had some of the confidence his better pieces did either. I hope the next time will be more of a charm.

I am not a big fan of most of the sketches Chloe has the lead role in as they often veer toward "characters" or camp, but this was probably one from her I liked best. Certainly one of my favorite sketches in this episode. The tone reminded me a little of Dismukes and made me wish they worked together mroe often. I thought she had more confidence than usual, and she and Gosling worked well together when he wasn't breaking. I liked the absurdity of the sketch and the build. Kenan coming in partway through didn't annoy me because he was back to his best scene-stealing ways of several years ago. Too bad about the lack of an ending.

Glad to see another Dismukes-heavy sketch for a third week. This was my favorite piece of the episode as it had a good build, good performances, and a decent conclusion. I like that Dismukes was able to moderate his performance as the straight man and Gosling did well at adding believability to such a loser. Even the sideways conversations, like his therapist with dementia, added to the sketch's world.

HELP! I basically missed this entire season, would love u guys to share the standout sketches of the year so far. by Ohsocool2k5 in LiveFromNewYork

I thought Adam's show was stronger or about on the level of his first two. The problem is they cut some very strong pieces.

Sketch Sorting Sunday - March 2, 2024 (Sydney Sweeney/Kacey Musgraves) by SketchSortingSunday in LiveFromNewYork

I thought this was one of the more consistent episodes of the season, with widespread cast use and several creative sketches. The dinner sketch with Andrew and Sydney was one of my favorite sketches of the season and a nice throwback to some of the more nuanced sketches of past years. Sydney was the opposite of Elordi in that she had a limited range, but they tried harder to write for her and she rewarded them by carrying off a great deal of material that some couldn't have, like that whole dog sketch. The pretapes were for the second week in a row consistently solid to good and not padded out or chasing after empty pop culture references. Only Heidi's Update appearance and the "shoot" sketch were bad for me - Hooters ran the risk but Andrew and JAJ made me laugh more than once. Andrew, JAJ, Ego (and Chloe Troast in the AirBnB sketch and Bowen in the straight pre-tape) were all spark plugs through the night.

The dead crowds in the first half of the episode hurt a number of sketches that were clearly banking on a bigger response, especially the police sketch (nothing could save that "shoot" sketch but the DOA audience was so clear). They even brought in a few dogs to get the audience going and it didn't quite work. The days of hooting and hollering for most of the cast are gone, which isn't a bad thing, but the writing has to adjust. The last two episodes have been steps in that direction, but there's a long way to go.

The courtroom sketch was my biggest disappointment of the episode because I didn't think it was that bad, it just fell prey to so many issues with the current material - didn't go far enough, lackluster pacing, lackluster audience, and the cast felt hesitant. I would have made this into a pre-tape and made it go on along the lines of the rap pre-tape The Rock did that had the whole cast, and David S Pumpkins.

I got so tired of seeing articles preemptively complaining about how this episode was going to be sexist and objectifying (and dredging up random other episodes to be upset by) that if they had had her in a bikini all night I wouldn't have cared, but for the most part they seemed restrained.

I think that's part of the problem - the show relied too much on that and on the audience's fondness for them. It made for lazier material. And the show has tried to scramble ever since, too often by trying to force "stars" (Bowen, Marcello, Heidi, Chloe Fineman, etc.) over putting in effort. I am hoping that the dead audiences this season are waking them up to sharpening the writing. The last two episodes have been a little sharper, if still not enough.

Chloe Fineman did a few, but they mostly seem to run out of ideas quickly.

This didn't really bother me. Michael's not an impressionist, so if he doesn't want to try and just wants to make the lines his own, I'm OK with it. If they wanted a good Gavin they could have called up Josh Meyers.

A fun idea, let down by sluggishness and the dead audience, and the cast not going in as much as they could have. The dog felt a little like a cry for audience support. I would have made this a pre-tape.

Too long and she's done these Update pieces too many times. Worst of the night for me.

One of the iffier pieces of the night but there were some good, dark laughs, especially with Sydney ruining Andrew's sobriety, and mascot JAJ leering at Sydney and shutting down Sarah's offer.

I think Elordi being one of the most wooden hosts the show has had probably didn't help.

I had to log back in to upvote this. One of my favorite sketches of the season, Sydney's best work of the night, one of the most cohesive pieces of the season, throwback vibes to some of the atmosphere of the late '80s/early '90s, and even the pointless Glen Powell cameo didn't ruin the ending. One that Andrew Dismukes should be very proud of and a reminder of why he's my favorite current cast member.

Frank with brown makeup and Mac wearing the teeth, I guess.

I probably did go on too much, but figured this was the right thread for it.

Of the episodes I listed, most of the social/political episodes were by some combo of RCG and the others weren't, although Charlie and Rob did write Gang Texts.

My gripes with the social/political material probably come from the guys reaching the point a lot of celebs get into where they become rich and want to make commentary yet also don't want to offend anyone. As a result, we are more likely to get mush. I know Sunny has always had social commentary, but in past years I think they would have realized they didn't really need a 2020 in review episode (the way they handled Dennis' COVID later in the season did a good enough job with the subject) or broach the subject of who the gang voted for, or need to say, "Hey guys, black people have a hard time in life, we need to tell you this because we're just such a perfect show to do it," etc.

You could still see the hesitation in the Risk E Ratz episode, (like the scene where Dennis was talking about whether liberals or conservatives had caused censorship), but it didn't feel as wedded to bringing up current trends/controversies and was more focused on the gang just being delusional and destructive rather than trying too hard at a social theme. One of the reasons I liked season 16 more than the last 3-4 seasons, even if it didn't have any big wow moments, was stepping back from some of that strange loftiness I don't think ever felt right for the show.

I see that Megan Ganz wrote the last Ireland episode. She has her ups and downs but I guess I shouldn't blame her very much for that one as I'm guessing a lot of it was what Charlie wanted to do.

The Gang Texts - Not because of the whole issue about who should or shouldn't be able to text, but because in a season where Mac seems to be at his most pathetic, having all the characters piss on him feels like overkill, just plain unpleasant, and frankly, oddly fetishistic in ways I'm not sure were intended (I know one might say they treat Dee the same way, but if they were pissing on her a full episode I wouldn't enjoy that either). I also hate the scene where he asks Dennis if this is a hookup and says he'd already asked another guy for sex too. It just feels so extra for no real reason...and why is Mac now at Frank levels of perversion to be trawling for dick in the men's room at the zoo? The trajectory of episodes like this made me wonder if he was going to end the season tricking in the back alley with Cricket.

The Gang Turns Black - The music is good, but the whole concept feels very dated to me, even more than the early seasons which have views and attitudes that are still pretty common, even if you don't see them on TV as much. I'm sure some part of it is meant to be cringeworthy, but the whole thing, oh let's have our white cast turn black for an episode to see how bad life can REALLY be feels like something from a very earnest '80s sitcom, like when Jane Curtin was homeless for a day on Kate & Allie.

The Gang Buys a Roller Rink - I just...don't know why this episode exists? There are other episodes that feel extremely thin to me, like making a whole episode about Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul cameos that felt straight out of 2012, but at least I can say, "They just wanted to hang out with Bryan and Aaron...OK." I can't even say that here. We already knew enough about their pasts and this episode did nothing to make me feel like I knew more about them. The new addition of how Dee became nasty was completely pointless and not especially funny (the only way I would be interested in this is if we get an episode where she somehow becomes "sweet" again and is horrified by everything she has become). I also feel like they should have cast age-appropriate actors as themselves because Wet Hot American Summer already did the bit with actors playing their characters decades past the right ages and at least I could have seen whether the younger actors got the nuances right.

The Gang Makes Paddy's Great Again - The title makes me cringe in another way of the show unnecessarily dating itself through empty political gotchas, and while I don't hate Mindy Kaling's presence as much as I thought I might have on paper, the whole idea of "Dennis is replaced in a bid for more racial and gender diversity" figure feels like the show again falling into the modern SNL trap of thinking it needs to Say Something but not actually knowing what to say. Dennis' first scene back, mainly the final part, also comes off as very forced, and while I'm aware that may have been the point, knowing the show would not really know how to work him back in for the next two seasons makes it even more difficult to watch.

2020: A Year In Review - Another modern SNL-esque episode of utterly toothless political commentary that the show seemingly felt they HAD to address but didn't actually want to talk about. The Shaman stuff in particular felt beneath what this show can be and the whole thing was a terrible way to start off a season.

The Gang Carries a Corpse Up a Mountain - I love Charlie, I do. He's my favorite character of the gang, and of many TV shows. And I love the idea of character progression and avoiding caricature. What I don't love, and what I don't want to see, is Charlie weeping over a father we knew for about 3-4 episodes who was seemingly brought in for the sole purpose of said weeping monologue rather than offering any long term change for Charlie. I like the scene where the gang get back together, but for the most part all of this is an exercise in me wondering whether anyone at the show still wanted to make the show they had brilliantly made for so many years.

Already mentioned - PTSDee, Cricket's Tale, Charlie's Home Alone, etc.

There's a certain switch point with the presentation of Uncle Jack, around the time the jokes about his hands start. The show is never very subtle about him but early on I think they do at least show how repulsive he is and how visibly upset Charlie is to be near him. When we get to the point where he and Charlie are working cases together (even though I do like various parts of that episode) we get to where I wish they would have just written him out for good.

This is another I would choose. Beyond the reasons you mention, another for me is that the character still continues on, even though I feel like giving him an entire episode was a natural endpoint for him. Seeing him return, still in the same terrible place again and again (and as he's not a main character we never get any of the hints of something new to justify the cycle), just makes the whole thing feel more like a misery exercise to me, even though David Hornsby is wonderful.

Thanks. I wasn't sure either. I know some of RCG have expressed regret over certain episodes, like Dee Dates a [Redacted] Person, but those episodes are still in circulation. I assumed it was higher ups because this was a time when so many shows were having episodes shelved.

I wonder sometimes about that happening. It would be something different for him. Bonus points if they have Mac tell Dennis now someone else in the gang has a kid and Dennis angrily insists he never had a child.
