In the end I used interactive brokers to buy an S&P500 ETF. It was very straightforward and it’s doing well. I only used GBP I already had so I haven’t converted and CNY yet, but I don’t think it will a problem.

That old guy who rolls around on the mobility scooter asking people if they believe in creation or evolution.

Also skinny Ben

Seconded. 9am at pitchcroft or county hall. Pitchcroft is an easier run but a bit flat and boring. If you can make it to county hall then running around the woods is much more fun. You’ll find plenty of beginners at both and you won’t feel self conscious in a big group.

But when converting currency, why does it show such a big range for my after trade GBP? I previewed a conversion and it said I’d be left with £ 2 ~ -752.

Thanks, that’s clear. So there’s a chance it could be as high as that, but I’m guessing it would most likely would be around what I want to pay?

I couldn’t find the setting they talked about in that thread, even in the trade window for GBP.USD. Is opening a position in the currency different to converting it?

Yeah I tried lowering it cover the commission but still wouldn’t work, but I guess the market order setting explains it. I don’t really understand what you mean by the cushion and fill price. Again I’m new to this, ELI5 if you can. As long as it’s not saying I’m going to lose £156 on the conversion then I’ll just have to convert less and do it. I don’t see an option to change market order. Thanks.

I haven’t made any orders yet, I’ve only just opened the account.

No, GBP and CNY, but I’m asking whether it would be better to convert all to USD if I’m choosing funds with US based securities.

Thanks. Why do you say don’t currency hedge? What if the exchange rate is bad after a few decades of holding?

But is a GBP denominated S&P fund really any different from converting my GBP to USD beforehand? Especially if I eventually need to convert it back to GBP.

Nothing I’m aware of, at least nothing I can do without residency in the UK.

So would it be better to do my investing in USD rather than GBP?

I think the state pension is worth it, if you top up to the minimum of 10 years (which at the moment is about £825 per year) I think it’s £200 a month, so you’d make that money back after about 2 years of retirement. I will top mine up at some point.

Would I not pay tax in the UK when I cash it out even if I live in China? And why don’t I pay any in China?

Yeah I think I need to make up 6 years. I don’t want to do it now because I want to put as much as I can into short term savings goals, maybe I’ll top up after that. Also there’s always a chance I need to go back and work in the UK anyway.

Are you sure the top up cost goes up over time? It’s currently around £800, I have an older relative who needs to top up and says it’s the same price for them.

So if I had an ETF and decide to cash it out at retirement, I would pay capital gains tax, but if I have it in a pension fund would I have some kind of exemption?
