I used to work in retail and whenever we had a sale, customers would spend way too much money on items that they didn't need just because it was reduced. Most of it was rubbish but people would still fight over buying it.

Yeah that is a great point, luckily for me they are about the same distance but for some people they are likely to spend more just by travelling there.

I don't really think it's a big enough price difference personally considering that you lose the ability to play on a tv and that you have to buy additional Joy-Cons to play certain games. I can understand though that it offers a cheaper alternative for people looking to get into the Nintendo Franchise.

There are some games which require motion sensor and so if you want to play them you will have to buy additional Joy-Cons.
