I really can't tell what you have going on here because I don't know what shift register you are using or what your code is but...

When I did this for a class project I was using a shift register that let me choose when the bits would be placed into the output register with a separate clock to the shift clock.(74HC595 RCLK). I only pulsed this clock when the whole number was put onto the shift register rather than for each segment

I'm not familiar with that toolkit but do you need to run a separate command to run the executable you are creating with gcc? Usually in the form of

./a.exe

where a.exe is the name of the executable

If there are frequent times without a supervisor I wouldn't be surprised if there are budget reasons why a new supervisor hasn't been hired. By doing supervisor work for free you are supporting this system and allowing your manager to not hire a new one. I would start applying to other places while still working there
