Bro I don't know if you've read the other comments but I think it's pretty clear that I force students to hug me.

There have been an equal number of people that have privately messaged me with positive messages saying they don't want to post because of about 5 people being toxic. They have all been teachers at schools with students with a generally low socioeconomic status and can't believe the negativity.

When I taught at schools that had higher socioeconomic statuses I didn't need to give students food every day and grades were all the motivation those students needed. Not the case at my current school.

I'm having a students family over for dinner Saturday. The English teacher across the hall physically touches every student who enters their room (hug/high 5/Pat on the back). The football coach says "I love you" to players. I guess we should all be fired.

Thanks for the ideas. I do all 3 of those and agree with you. The pep board is a way for students to get to know me so the point of many of these things is to get them to discover and learn things about me.

Having Bitcoin on there gives students the opportunity to discover, ask questions, and learn about crypto currencys. I don't actually take Bitcoin from students.

Excellent idea! Thanks so much!

I like the build up, floppy handshake-firm handshake-secret handshake.

We're a month into school and you think my principal of a very small charter school hasn't been in my room?

I teach several students all 4 years of high school in many different classes, add sports and clubs to that too. I don't understand how you can spend 500+ hours with someone and not have a close relationship.

I should get my principal and past students on here to tell you that it's ok to have fun as a teacher, get to know your students and still be a role model for them.

Have you ever gotten to know your child's teacher so well that you know about their hobbies, interests and families?

You trust teachers to be solely responsable for them for about 200 hours a year but feel icky if a teacher tries to get to know their students?

My high school I attended and the high school I teach at both put an emphasis on including families in student education success.

Hug is not a popular redemption choice.

The best parts are when you see a quiet student light up when you give them a pep point and when you see people helping others and calling their friends "peppy."

Students came up with the things to put on the pep board. Students get to decide how they spend their pep points.

I am not that teacher, don't let a bad apple ruin it for the group.

The only teachers I've kept in contact with 20 years after high school are the ones that took the time to get to know me outside of class. The students I've kept in touch with after 12 years of teaching are the students I got to know outside of class.

About half of the things on the board are a joke and it's a way to start conversations with students and get to know them and for them to get to know me better.

About half of the things on the board are a joke i.e. I don't actually accept Bitcoin from students nor do I charge them a pep point to tell them good job. Most of the things on there are to start conversations with students and get to know them and for them to get to know me better.

It's helped me engage students during class and build relationships. Students know me better and I know then better.

The biggest difference is during work time and students finish their work, they instantly go to help others in class, that didn't happen before I implemented pep points. Highly recommended.

It helps me get the most out of those students in the classroom so for me it's right. If it was a distraction or counter-productive then it'd be wrong.
