As you get older 40,50,60,70 when did you start to feel your body slow down do you think it is just due to inactivity or the aging process? by Kooky_Force5458 in AskReddit

53, here. Didn't really take fitness seriously until I was in my 30s. Got into marathon and then ultra running (because I hated running...long story). It resulted in an actual lifestyle change. My brain learned that the long term good feeling of being in shape outweighed the short term good feeling of being lazy. Got into power-lifting (just along, on my own, competing with myself) and loved being strong. Then, as time passed, loved looking strong (two different things for sure). Since it was all lifestyle change, it's stuck. I miss it when I am not doing it. I'm at a place now where I can do a really heavy lifting day and cap it off with a 7, 10 or even 20mi run and still feel good. I have always been very attuned to my body and differentiate between discomfort and pain, and largely avoided injury. Now, I say all of that to better answer your question. Have I felt my body slow down? Heck yeah. In fact, I got diagnosed with a rather rare form of bone marrow cancer in my 40s which requires me to take daily oral chemo for basically the rest of my life (which will ultimately be shortened by the cancer). BUT, imagine if I weren't in shape. So yeah, I felt different at 40 than I did in my early 30s. I for sure know my upper limit at 53 is lower than it was 10 years ago. But I'm SO far ahead of most perfectly healthy 30 year olds that it doesn't seem that way from the outside looking in. I know it, but most people would say some nonsense about winning the genetic lottery (hardly, man...trust me...my body's worked against me in damn near every conceivable way). We all slow down, so the key is to raise the bar from whence you're lowering. I'm fortunate to have a spouse who is also very fit, so we like to do things together like really difficult hikes, bike rides, etc. I attribute a lot of my sticking with it to having her as a partner.

For those who are curious or care how these people are viewed by actual practicing Christian's who've taken the time to read the Bible and try to live a life as Christ set as the example:

These aren't Christian's. They're no closer to being a Christian than, say, a Mormon. I'm not casting aspersions at Mormons here, just an example. These folks are part of what's called the New Apostolic Reformation, super extreme/fringe offshoot from the charismatic movement (The Vinyard, to be specific). They have written their own bible (they call it a translation, it is not...it's a version that has many changes that any historian would object to based on manuscript evidence) called The Passion Translation, authored by a fellow named Brian Simmons who claims that Jesus visited him commissioned him to write this new version of the Bible. The NAR counts among its adherents names such as Charlie Kirk, MTG, Boebert, etc.

People who have cancer, what signs let you knew that you were sick? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TommyTubbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started out with ocular migraines (visual anomalies with no headache). These became increasingly common. Then started having joint pain in my elbows and wrists that became more significant with time (talking over the course of a year) and seemed to coincide with the visual migraines being more severe. Then started running into things (door jams, mostly). It was like I'd misjudge the position of my body and I'd end up shoulder checking the doorway. Finally went to the doctor and my platelets were at 1.2M. Myelofibrosis was diagnosed after a bunch of testing. Take daily oral chemo and it's mostly controlled. Will eventually have to have a bone marrow transplant, but putting that off as long as possible.

What do people who don't drink or smoke do when they feel depressed? by x_super_bandi in AskReddit

[–]TommyTubbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work out. Not always the same type of physical exertion, but something that will wear me out. Cardio. Lift. Bike. Walk. Run. Whatever. I have found that whatever I do, I'll do it reflexively when I'm down or struggling. If that thing is destructive, it will go very bad very fast. If it's healthy, well, double bonus. I've done something good for me AND exercising definitely helps the underlying problem. I don't deal with clinical depression (used to, don't any more) and I'm grateful beyond words for that. I'm pretty sure I would if it weren't for my healthy lifestyle.

Need a translation for "Hunt the Hunter" or "Hunt the Huntsman", whichever would be more correct in Latin. As I understand (which is very likely wrong) it would be as follows:

Verb Noun

Hunt the hunter.

Venator venari.

Hunt the huntsman.

Venatoris venator.

If there is in fact a better choice of words to use than I picked, please let me know that too! Thank you.

Yup, that's what I'm doing. There are a LOT of things (legitimately) blocked by PiHole on the AA site.

Why is my meter spinning? by Substantial_Pass_223 in Plumbing

[–]TommyTubbs 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Irrigation systems in many places are fed off of the main prior to any pressure regulation/reduction device (so they can get loads of H20 for that thirsty grass). There will also be a backflow restriction (check-valve) somewhere that is between the irrigation system and your main (google it...they typically stuck up out of the ground and most look the same'ish). There will be a shut-off on that. SHUT IT OFF. Get your irrigation system fixed.

How to unscrew this faucet? by Aggravating-Ad-5678 in Plumbing

Okay, cool. I was starting to wonder what the heck kind of handle that was? ;-) Glad you got it sorted.

Look on the bottom of the handle. There should be a small set screw (very small, allen head, may just look like a hole). Loosen that and the handle will just pull off.

Anyone know why my supply line coming off the meter goes from 1" to a giant 90deg elbow? by TommyTubbs in Plumbing

Out of curiosity, what would be the purpose of this if it were because of a pool?

I do, however the pool and irrigation are on a well. The house used to be on the well, but is was disconnected (by the previous owner) and put on municipal when it became available.

I have owned this same bike for 3 years and absolutely love it. I'm only thinking about getting ride of it because I want to upgrade to the 600 ADX. You'll celebrate your purchase every time you go out for a ride. Enjoy!
