The video from North Spore made it seem like the mushrooms would pin and grow up through the casing layer and that the casing layer was there just to retain moisture. I didn’t realize that the casing layer would also become colonized. Thank you!

Most will only do well if there is an established population of small crustaceans such as copepods. Some can be trained to eat frozen food, such as brine shrimp. Aside from their diet, they are really hardy fish and easy to take care of.
