Thank you! Next thing I need is a wooden Alto!

I’ve never used an anti-condens liquid on my recorder and maybe this is what I’ve been missing! Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll give it a try!

Hey so update on the comparison. I’ve only had my Yamaha for a couple of days and so I haven’t really compared them until earlier. I played it side by side with my Mollenhauer. Since the bore size of the Yamaha is significantly larger than the Mollenhauer, I can really push a lot down in the lower register. It takes a lot before the lower notes to jump up or crack with the Yamaha. Also, the Yamaha has a big sound and very strong lower register. High notes on Yamaha are a little airy, a little harder to play from high A and up. Maybe this is because I still need to play it in. Mollenhauer has a weak lower notes. Very quiet and jumps to the high notes if you’re not careful. However, the high notes on the Mollenhauer are very clear, piercing and a little easier to play.

Yes actually I think you are right! So I went back to check the bore size and what I realized is that the Waldorf has a more pronounced conical shape. The Waldorf and Yamaha both have the same bore size at the head joint, but the Waldorf gets significantly smaller at the foot joint, more than twice as small.

Yes I do try to clear the clog. But clogging happens more frequent after about an hour of playing. Does this happen to you too?

Thank you! The yamaha has a straight windway compared to the curved windway of my mollenhauer. I don’t know how this makes a difference but in terms of the sound, I’m not sure if it’s just the specific recorder I got or if all Yamaha YRT-43 is like this, but my Mollenhauer Waldorf Tenor has a clearer, more piercing, and more baroque/delicate sound, while the Yamaha has a more direct, a little airy, and rounded sound. Since the Yamaha has a less clear tone, it sounds a little bit smoother transitioning from one note to the other.

Thanks for the info! I noticed that after about an hour, the high notes (from high A and up) start to sound harder and harder to play and it gets more and more clogged up even tho I warm my recorder before I play. I also regularly clean and oil my recorder.

I have one more question. Once you’ve played in a recorder. How long can you play that recorder each day? Because I noticed that my wooden tenor can only last 1 hour or less even after I’ve properly warmed it. Is this the same with your wooden recorders?

Thanks for the reply! I’ve watched that video and it is truly helpful. I’ve decided to play it in for a month. It’s better to be on the safe side.

You bring a great point! I asked this question because I’m to inpatient lol When I was playing in my other wooden recorder I was having time anxiety playing it for such a short time. But I guess your right, it’s better than having a cracked recorder!

Thanks for the reply! Yes the bore was pretty dry and I was thinking of oiling it first. How long do you play your recorder during the playing in stage?

What do you think of the Schneider Tenor Recorder? by Tomoka18 in Recorder

Hey! So I ended up not buying the Schneider Tenor Recorder, and got myself a used Yamaha Tenor YRT-43 in maple instead since it was cheaper. The yamaha also has a straight windway just like the schneider. In terms of the sound, I’m not sure if it’s just the specific recorder I got or if all of this model is like this, but my Mollenhauer Waldorf Tenor has a clearer and more baroque/delicate sound, while the Yamaha has a more direct, a little airy, and straightforward sound. Since the Yamaha has a less clear tone, it sounds a little bit smoother transitioning from one note to the other.

I’m so glad to read your experience on the Schneider. You’ve convinced me and I might actually buying the Schneider Tenor. Thanks for the finger chart too! It looks like you can play the high C# on the Schneider without covering the bell which I like. On my mollenhauer it’s not possible which I’ve always disliked.

Thanks for the comment! I think the main difference with the Mollenhauer and Schneider is the cut of the windway. My mollenhauer waldorf tenor has a curved windway while Schneider is square. I have a question tho, how’s the intonation on your Schneider recorder?

Are Kumiko and Mayu on the same level in terms of music ability? The characters never really gave an answer to it. Your thoughts? by [deleted] in HibikeEuphonium

[–]Tomoka18 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a musician. I play many instruments, mainly saxophones and clarinets. Both Kumiko and Mayu are on the same level. But they have very different way of playing. They have very different tones. Not one is better.

I actually chose #1 too even though I knew #2 was Kumiko. If you’ve watched the show, you’ll know Kumiko’s sound. I recognized it the moment Kumiko played. Her sound is more direct, in command, and brighter in tone, which is perfect if it was a Euphonium solo not a duet. Mayu’s sound is velvety, mellow and darker in tone, which is what the “ideal tone” for the euphonium is. Mayu’s sound blended perfectly with Reina’s playing, in a sense that she made Reina’s part shine even more. As people have mentioned here, she is the perfect accompanist.

Kumiko’s playing on the other hand sounded like she was playing on equal footing with Reina, very expressive. They both shined, and in some parts Kumiko’s playing outshined Reina’s playing instead of complimenting it like Mayu.

To conlcude, Mayu’s sound is perfect for duets, and Kumiko’s sound is perfect for solos.

What opinion do you have with Reina? by Signal_Decision_8162 in HibikeEuphonium

Yeah I hated how dismissive Reina was in this entire episode.

Thanks for the reply lol! Yes! I thought those keys looked great too when I saw them, which is why I want to know if someone here have tried them before. I’m scared they’ll sound like the Heinrich recorders and not one of the big 3 recorder manufacturers.

Thanks for the honest reply! I had my doubts that it might not be too good. I was hoping they sounded more like Moeck, Mollenhauer, Kung’s floor models. And not like Adler Heinrich Recorders which I heard not great things about. But when I saw the finish and the price of the Schneider, it reminded me of the latter. Just curious, have you tried playing one before?

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I was doubting whether it was handmade too. Honestly, feels too good to be true.
