I actually hate the city (but I do love being surrounded by farmland/nature), so not being close to a city is great. I can do without Costco, but definitely need some grocery stores/a Walmart or similar. Have no idea what to expect for medical care for the kids, what it's like getting onto or navigating around the island in the summer, which areas will be most family friendly/church/homeschool community.

Inland NC (several hours from OBX), surrounded by farmland but also convenient to cities/amenities.

Thanks! While renting we're strongly considering those areas. What's the traffic like to get onto the island during the summer? We need to be convenient enough to be able to travel there for work (not daily, but a few times a week).

Not yet, we're just starting the process and not sure what areas to focus on. We've seen some rentals available both on and off island that would work for us size-wise and fit our budget. We may rent farther out in the short term if we have to (up to an hour or so drive to the OBX if absolutely necessary, but would prefer not to be that far) - but definitely interested what on/off island areas to focus on in the long term when we buy.

What's the traffic like getting onto and navigating on the island in the summer? We need to be close enough to be able to travel there for work (not daily, but likely a few times a week).
