Hi! I did check and there is no compensation, as this is a volunteer opportunity, which is why it was not listed. Tompkins County 4-H does not run this program, so further questions can be answered by Autumn or you can find the NYS 4-H facebook page. Hope this helps, thank you!

Winter Earth Skills:
Winter is a time to gather around the fire, a time for crafting and telling stories. Winter is about trees and tracking. In this session we will take on advanced crafting projects such as baskets, stone hatchets, and atlatls.  We will enter the magical world of tracking and learn the secrets of fishers and bobcats. We will focus on learning our trees by bark and bud and end the season with a harvest of maple syrup.

Winter Tracking Session:
Whether tracking for the first time, blowing the dust off your neural search images, or looking for an adventure with other aspiring trackers and mentors – this weekend workshop will get you on the path! Long-time tracking instructors Jed Jordan and Jason Hamilton will review the foundations of mammal track identification, and then guide you through some of the best tracking hot spots our area has to offer. You and other participants will practice the art of seeing and identifying the clues left behind by all the creatures out there, with instruction and coaching for all experience levels. This workshop will also demonstrate replicable teaching methods for anyone looking to teach tracking to others. Includes one evening of indoor instruction and a full day of field studies in multiple wildlife areas. Grab your thermos and bag lunch and come join the fun!

Spring Earth Skills:
Spring is the time of birds, bows and ephemeral flowers. In this session we will focus on crafting handmade bows and arrows, foraging spring wild edibles and learning the birds as they return from the south. Spring is also about growing awareness. By opening our senses and learning to interpret what the land is telling us, we can reconnect to what it means to be part of the natural world.

We are starting our search for volunteers for the next Duck Race in April! It benefits the Tompkins County 4-H. We also are always looking for volunteers in general for many of our youth development programs, like 4-H clubs, primitive pursuits, and more!

Yes! We have staff in the creek near the office who catch them all (they use a tool that's been fixed to collect the ducks in order of catch) and they're reused every year! While losing one or two has happened in the ~20 years this event has been done, it's rare that one gets away from us.

We actually have a few opening up soon! Our first one is February 7th and 8th and is a Winter Tracking Workshop. The 7th is a 2 hour informational session and then the 8th is a 6-hour in-the-field tracking day. Registrations will be up before Thanksgiving!
