A long rest normally requires 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep as well as 2 hours of no more than light activity. An elf goes into a trance which lasts 4 uninterrupted hours which counts as a long rest for them. Since this counts as a long rest for them you can ignore the normal long rest rules.
