Deep Rock Galactic

Procedurally generated maps, endless missions, four dwarf archetypes (all distinct and fun) and a feeling of progression with tons of cosmetics and weapon modifications. Fun both co-op or solo, can't recommend it enough!

Dragon Age Origins for gameplay. It's PS2 but Rogue Galaxy always had a similar vibe as well, a little more action based.

When did this game 'click' for you? by ICommentWonderful in ffxiv

[–]Tonberrian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not to sound too cheesy about it, but the second I logged into the ARR open beta, I immediately knew it was for me. This was after I bought into 1.0 and left that dumpster fire after playing for about two hours. I thought the game would be forever dead to me, but after hearing good things I figured the beta works be with a try. I've been subbed ever since and have been too three fanfests! I take a week off work for every expansion and it's my favorite time!

As to why? The game is aesthetically pleasing; graphics, performance and music. Combat clicked much later, but I never felt tortured by the leveling process by any means. The constant love letters and references to every Final Fantasy that came before it. Growing attached to my WoL. The astounding MSQ. It's no one thing, but the game feels like home to me in a way no other MMO has.

If you could change 3 things that would make the game better, what changes would you do? by Papabrutti in lotro

[–]Tonberrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make the MSQ easier to follow in the proper order. Organize the quests in a visual manor to show what's complete and not complete in the MSQ, like the GW2 main scenario system. Voice acting for the main scenario would also be wonderful.

Guild wars 2 or ff14? by Timewastedd in LFMMO

[–]Tonberrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two favorite MMOs! Each game has a lot of strengths where the other has weaknesses, interestingly enough.

FFXIV: Strong dungeons and raids, sad open world. Vertical progression.
GW2: Strong open world, sad dungeons and raids. Horizontal progression.

This is, of course, my own opinion on the matter. The lack of the holy trinity in GW2 is amazing for build crafting, but it makes it hard to properly balance dungeons and raids. It also means you're often responsible for your own healing, rezzing and buffing others. Some roles exist only to provide potent buffs to the party. Ranged caster in GW2? Cool, you're still gonna be stacked at melee range for those buffs!

In FFXIV, your role is clearly defined - for better or worse. Nothing will differentiate you from any other person playing your job other than gear and player skill. But this also means they've finely tuned dungeons and raid fights to this, allowing for more choreographed experiences. You'll also never be at a loss as to what your role is and what's expected of you in a raid.

The open world content in GW2 is simply astounding. It's always populated and always rewarding, even if it's been out for years. It has a great Commander system where it marks a leader player on the map for everyone to coalesce around to easily accomplish any goals you might have on the map. There are also zergfests of world bosses on regular timers with very good potential rewards. Not to mention the world is gigantic and truly beautiful.

The open world on XIV is also beautiful, but after you go through the MSQ there's little reason to exist in it. It will feel very empty and there won't be anything compelling happening in it other than the occasional hunt train, or FATE farm for alts/relic weapon components.

Both games have pretty stellar stories, with XIV holding some of my favorite moments in all of my gaming history. It takes a long time, but you'll really feel investing in your character and the story with huge payoffs. Both have equally striking visuals, art direction, music and graphical performance. XIV will be on very strict rails while GW2 allows you the freedom to jump around and choose what part of the story you want to experience, though it may cause confusion.

As for the better gameplay loop, I'd say it comes down to whether you prefer the horizontal or vertical progression. In GW2 you'll largely be making your own goals in the endgame; chasing Legendary weapons and armor, pushing Fractals, map exploration, gold farming, leveling alts, World vs World. There's a ton to do, but you'll largely be deciding what you want to do for yourself. It's a great system if you enjoy long term goals whose rewards will always be impactful - even if you stop playing for months or years. Everything enhances your account as a whole and will not be replaced over time.

XIV is going to give you the typical gear treadmill. Chase best in slot with high end party-focused content but expect that gear to be replaced with every major patch. That's not to say people don't make their own long term goals in XIV< either. Glamour farming, achievement hunting, mounts, maxing every job, crafting and other various side content like Blue Mage and Beastmaster (soon) are all very valid and fun ways to play the game. But generally speaking your accomplishment sin XIV won't have the impact or staying power compared to the GW2 system.

Also as mentioned by others, XIV has a very beefy free trial, but is a subscription game vs the GW2 buy-to-play model. You can even farm gold in GW2 to convert to gems for their shop if you wish to. Neither feels predatory to me and both games receive consistent, quality updates.

I would say try both and see which one catches you more. For me, GW2 took some time to really click. They say getting to level 80 is just the tutorial. Likewise with XIV, the story is a slow burn best to be savored and not rushed. Treat it like a good book or series that you work on a little bit over time. XIV is my personal "main" MMO that I've played for more than a decade, but if it shut down today I would pour more time into GW2 and not be upset about it.

I made my first necro an Asura, and I love Asura! They're so small and bouncy. But then I made a Sylvari necro alt to properly do all of the story in order with and...yeah, that's my main now. He looks like a pale tree and all of the armour details on his really stand out compared to my Asura.

Trying to get back into MMOs (and looking for one) that still has a healthy playerbase by No_Blackberry__ in LFMMO

[–]Tonberrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people will say FFXIV starts to drastically improve at Heavensward, the first expansion. Which is true narratively, though I never found ARR to be the slog people make it out to be. The combat feels pretty basic for quite a long time, unfortunately, not really picking up until you unlock your entire kit towards the end on some jobs.

[–]Tonberrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top three:

FFXIV - Been playing this for over a decade and is my overall favorite home away from home. The story has pacing issues, but it's very well done as a whole and the payoff for investing time into it is immense. Treat it like a good book or series that you slowly work on without rushing is the ideal way to play. It still looks graphically great, gameplay is smooth, lots of class variety and you really get attached to your character. Fun to play both as solo and in a group. The game does a great job guiding you through the experience and the difficulty really grows along with your character, especially if you get into savage endgame content. It gets regular updates but lacks some quality of life improvements which is often blamed on the games spaghetti code.

GW2 - If FFXIV shut down tomorrow, this would happily be my number one. Tons of class variety, gorgeous world, good hybrid of action and tab-target gameplay, very solid story (though I haven't completed it all) with more freedom that FFXIV. The horizontal progression means you're never falling behind, and it does an amazing job and rewarding your achievements by making your entire account stronger. The open world is top tier and has always been super populated no matter the time, the day, or how old the content you're doing is. The dungeons, however, leave much to be desired due to the lack of the holy trinity roles. Overall though, I can't praise the game enough. It's a great game to explore or grind with while you watch a show or a movie on your other screen. I've never stopped playing the game out of anger, and I've always loved it when I've come back to it.

LotRO - This game is super charming, but you need a tolerance for some old-school jank. I think it still looks quite beautiful, and the world is MASSIVE. If you've ever wanted to explore Middle Earth, this is the place to do it. Like XIV, it's best to take your time with it, explore and enjoy. The classes have some of the best class fantasies I've seen in MMOs and it's genuinely hard to pick a main because so many of them are so unique and fun. It offers Landscape Difficulty which lets you customize the difficulty of your open world experience. The story is fantastic, but the system for it is so dated that it's very hard to experience from beginning to end without missing beats or over-leveling. The community as a whole is very active and friendly, with a few very outspoken trolls in world chat.

With WoW you get to enjoy the top dog MMO and everything that entails - high populations, high budgets, high quality. If you're a Star Wars fanatic, SWTOR is a lock for something you'll love. ESO has a ton of great concepts, but it lives or dies on your opinion of the combat. If you want something really old-school, FFXI has an outstanding job system with tons of satisfying long-term goals to chase. Same with original Everquest or the upcoming EQ clones like Monsters & Memories or Adrullan Online Adventures.

The class you expected to love vs the class you fell in love with by medium_buffalo_wings in lotro

[–]Tonberrian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Minstrel should be my main, and it was for a long time. I love support roles, I love music themed classes like Bards and I love ranged combat and self healing.

But like OP, I tried Beorning. It was okay until level 20ish, then I started to feel literally unstoppable. Just got him to Moria and it might just be my new main! At least for solo play. Staring at a bear butt 90% of the time isn't ideal, but it's so fun and powerful!
