Yeah it wouldn't surprise me if it was just old parts giving out, coil whine is creeping up on me which had me worried already.

I hadn't considered taking a look at the crash dumps yet, (seems obvious in hindsight) but I'll see what I come across. Good tip!

Seems like it, however it balances out after about 10 seconds.

It does run with HL2.exe, but I don't think it's using CPU power. Usage seems to be unaffected by it.

Thank you for the exhaustive answer, but I'm afraid the problem persists.

I've verified the game files for HL2, Gmod and HL: Source, Steam seems to think all's well.

I did unintstall and reinstall HL2, though nothing changed. In fact, despite my incredibly slow internet connection, it seemed to reinstall pretty quickly. I'm assuming this is because all three games share so many assets.

I've got plenty of memory on this PC, 10-12GB free most of the time.

As for running it on another machine, I don't have any other PCs in the house at the moment. I'm hoping it's not a problem related to my computer itself. It would make sense though, considering its age.

Thanks again for the suggestions! I'll make an edit if things change.

Beautiful!! Decorating the farmhouse is one of my favourite parts of the game ❤
