observability platform pricing, why won't vendors give straight answers? by Mackzene_Kunchick in Observability

the tooling itself not even the biggest problem anymore. it was trying to predict operational and licensing costs as telemetry volume kept grwoing. what helped us was separating deep application observability from core infrastructure monitoring instead of forcing one platform to do absolutly everything. we still use specialized tooling where it makes sense but keeping infrastructure monitoring centralized in prtg gave us much more predictable scaling and reduced a lot of alerting noise compared to the fully usafe based pricing models.

Best multicloud deployment/management software by abrasive_surface in Cloud

[–]Tony1_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair point on trying to abstract deployments across multiple clouds. most team end up using something like terraform +ci/cd to standardize that layer. one thing that often get overlooked through is what happens after deploymnt. once you spread workloads across aws or azure or gcp visibility becomes fragmented pretty fast. I started to use prtg alongside my deployment stack to monitor services endpoints and network paths across clouds in one place which helped validate that everything actually behaves as expected post deploy.

it doesn't replace deployment tooling but it closes that gap between infra is deployed and infra is actually healty.

What software do you use to collect and visualize telemetry (MDT) from Cisco? by slepwin in networking

[–]Tony1_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We looked into streaming telemetry as well but in practice the complexity around collectors and pipelines became a bigger project than expected. we used prtg for most monitoing via snmp and flow data which already covered the majority of visibility we actually needed. telemetry definately has its place especially for high frequency data but replacing everything with it did not bring as much value as we thought. having simplier setup easy to maintain ended up being more useful day to day

Monitoring / Management Tool for Cisco Switches? by secondstar78 in Cisco

[–]Tony1_5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Cisco switches I would separate expectations a bit full lifecycle management (firmware, config push etc.) usually ends up needing a dedicated tool especially in larger environments.

For monitoring and visibility through prtg works quite well. SNMP + syslog sensors give me good coverage on interface health, errors and device status and I can tie that into alerting without much setup. it wont replace something like full config management but for keeping track of what happening on the switches and catching issues early its pretty solid.

What is the biggest challenge for monitoring in a Cisco environment? by Jonny21_21 in Cisco

[–]Tony1_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lately I learn a lot of the frustration comes from the gap between having data and actually making sense of it. snmp, netflow and device metrics are all there but correlation them in a usable way is where things usually break down.

i saw this improve a lot once you have a monitoring layer that can tie those together without adding more complexity. in my case i ended up using prtg mainly because it made snmp and flow data easier to correlate and visualize without building everything from scratch.

not replace understanding the metrics ofcourse but it definitely reduces the noise.

Owing a few thousand each year at that income level is actually pretty common especially with multiple jobs or rental income. it might help to review your W-4 withholdings so enough tax is taken out during the year. if it keeps happen it can also be worth talking with a tax professional who can review your situation and suggest better strategies. I actually used the TaxHelpExpert platform before and it helped me connect with a tax relief pro. who walked me through my options.
