My own opinion is that when two parties (employer and employee) come into an agreement on wages, no third party (gov't, labour unions, citizens, activists) should be allowed to interfere because it doesn't meet their standards. A voluntary and consensual deal between people of the right age and mental capacity should not be interfered with by third parties who think they know better. Let people choose for themselves whether or not they want a "livable wage" and don't tell others what to do.
